5 Things All Moms Look Forward to on the First Day of School

Now that's a woman whose kids are back in school again!

The first day of school is almost here. Can you believe it? It seems like forever ago that I wrote about the things I am dreading about back-to-school season. And while I am still apprehensive about each and every one of those annoyances that occur in September, there is a part of me, a teeny, tiny part of me that just cannot wait until the kids are back in school again.

There are very small yet specific things I'm really looking forward to….

Peace
I know that from 8am-3pm everyday, I will never have to hear that "he did this" or "she did that", "I don't want to", or "why do I have to"? After a summer that was tipped off with two days indoors from the east coast hurricane, the absence of complaints will be music to my ears.

Quiet
I am the type of person who really likes the library environment, no joke. When it is quiet and peaceful, I feel calm and collected. But best of all, I welcome back new ideas for upcoming projects, articles, and books.

Earlier bedtimes
I'll be honest…this summer my kids, with the exception of my 8-year-old, went to bed well after I did. Then, of course, they slept in. But, hey it was summer, and that's what older kids do. Yet, I still will love when it hits 10 or 11pm and the house is (you guessed it) quiet again.

Uninterrupted phone interviews
I work from home and I would not have it any other way. After years spent in the corporate world, doing away with the seemingly constant interruptions from co-workers, office politics, and long commute is nothing less than pure joy. But when the kids are home, my phone interviews are ever so carefully timed around a basketball game, art session or game of Scrabble. I close my office door and hope for the best. They are usually very good; it's just that the anticipation of having them remain out of earshot gets to me. So, hello again to easy breezy interviews.

Impromptu shopping sprees and cleaning sessions
I hate shopping, really. I would rather order it online than waste time traipsing through a crowded store. The only thing I hate more than shopping is shopping with the kids. The same goes for cleaning. If I throw out a certain beat-up broken McDonald's toy from 4 years ago, eyes light up and the speech about why they need this toy begins. But when they're at school, what they don't know, doesn't hurt them, right?

What are you looking forward to the most about the start up of school again? How will you spend your first day?
