Men and Women CAN Be Friends (But He Still Wants to Sleep with You)

Ariane Marder, Glamour magazine

It's what every guy I've dated tried to explain to me: "It's not that you can't be friends with a guy; it's that you should know he most likely wants to get in your pants."

A recent survey published in the Daily Mail found that men, regardless of their dating status, are more than likely to entertain sexual feelings toward their female friends than vice versa. Women, being more evolved and all (wink), are more complicated in regards to their attraction to male comrades. Per the article, "Single and attached women showed the same level of attraction to their male friend. But attached women tended only to want something to come of that attraction if their relationship was in trouble. Women were also less attracted to attached men."

The study also found that it changes as men get older. "A second questionnaire for 140 middle-aged people, who were almost all married, found levels of attraction between male and female friends fairly equal. Middle-aged men's attraction to their female friends was much lower than that of the younger men, except among those who were single." I wonder if that's because middle-aged men have had more time to sow their oats, so they're less compelled to want to have sex with everything that moves.

Anyhoo, I have a hard time thinking that this is true across the board. There has to be some merit to straight-up platonic friendships, right? Although I'd love to believe that every guy I'm friends with wants to sleep with me, I can't (or don't want to) imagine that the man I love is attracted to his "girl" friends. And I guess even if he did, it's not the end of the world-as long as he is not actively trying to make it happen.

Do you think this study has legs? Are you of the mind that your guy friends are secretly-or not so secretly-attracted to you?
