Can You Be Too Good-Looking? Rob Lowe Thinks So

It must be tough being Rob Lowe. What with his lengthy career, happy marriage, two sons, and chiseled looks and all. But according to him, being ridiculously good-looking ain't all it's cracked up to be.

Say what Rob?

In an interview with The New York Times magazine, 50-year-old Lowe stated, "There's this unbelievable bias and prejudice against quote-unquote good-looking people, that they can't be in pain or they can't have rough lives or be deep or interesting." He went on, "They can't be any of the things that you long to play as an actor. I'm getting to play those parts now and loving it. When I was a teen idol, I was so goddamn pretty I wouldn't have taken myself seriously."

I wonder if he and Brad Pitt could trade notes on this? Isn't this just a little denigrating to leading actors who played interesting roles - ones "in pain?" After all, Tom Cruise masked his handsome features for Born on the 4th of July, and the stunning Charlize Theron won an Oscar® for her utterly unglamorous role as a serial killer in Monster.

According to Lowe, he believes that there is a "historical bias that good-looking people are not funny." Really? What are you saying Rob about Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Tina Fey, and Jerry Seinfield? Chris D'Elia is pretty handsome, and as far as I'm concerned, old George Clooney can be incredibly funny in his films and is waaayy easy on the eyes.

Lowe also confessed a dark secret: He was a bit of a "nerd" at school. "It took being famous to make me cool, which, by the way, I never forgot," he said. Imagine looking like Lowe in the latter years of high school? With THOSE cheekbones. Can you even vaguely imagine him in the nerd group? Me neither.

Lowe is set to appear opposite the brilliantly named Rob Riggle and Rebecca Romijn in his own NBC comedy series, and he has just released his memoir, Love Life. Seems that for the über-handsome Lowe, the vision in the mirror wasn't all it was cracked up to be …
