Would You Buy a Michael Fassbender Robot?

This is a very serious question: If you could buy a Michael Fassbender robot, would you?

Okay, so maybe it's not THAT serious of a question; we'd just like to draw attention to a creative "trailer" for Prometheus that hit the Internet yesterday, starring the inimitable Mr. Fassbender. Why is "trailer" in quotation marks? Because it's… not exactly a trailer.

Allow me to elaborate. As you may know, in the upcoming sci-fi flick from Alien director Ridley Scott, Michael plays an android; so, in an effort to capitalize both on this and on the fact people generally find robots fascinating, the marketing team behind the film has put together an ad not directly for the movie, but rather for the model of Michael's AI. Ladies and gentlemen, meet David, a creation of Weyland Industries.

Now, the wacky thing is that the studio decided to label the video "viral" when they released it; calling something "viral" purely so that you can MAKE it go viral kind of goes against the whole meaning of "viral" in the first place. That aside, though, it's pretty clever, no?

As he himself says, David can do almost anything that's asked of him. He can assist your employees-by which he means he can play chess with another piece of AI that looks exactly like he does-and unlike the robots in Isaac Asmiov's I, Robot, he can carry out directives that humans may find… distressing. These apparently includes gazing longingly at bunches of white flowers. He also likes to paint small models in his spare time. Who wouldn't like to have a robot version of Michael Fassbender painting them little die-cast models to decorate their mantelpiece?

Although, as much as I love Michael Fassbender, maybe having a Fassbender-bot might not be as good an idea as it sounds. Does anyone else suspect that Michael might be the next step (or several steps, as the case may be) from Siri? From there, it's only a hop, skip, and a jump away from Skynet, and, well… we all know how THAT turned out.

Prometheus, which also stars Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron, hits cinemas on June 8. Summer sci-fi blockbuster, here we come!
