Although breast cancer is not the leading cause of death in women (heart disease is), it lurks in every woman's mind due to the intimate nature and the rapidness of its onset.

Over the last decade, many advances have been made in the fields of research and treatment, but did you know that there are a handful of things you could do-or better yet-not do that might reduce your risk of breast cancer?

While the soy debate is still very much a debate, other correlations appear to be mounting.

A variety of products found on the shelves of the supermarket today contain hormone disruptors , chemicals that interfere with such hormones as estrogen.

And although the scientists are quick to remind us that they can't say the products will CAUSE breast cancer, they do say that the science shows that avoiding them may REDUCE your risk overall.

Ready to make a clean sweep? Ditch these 4 culprit ingredients from your home and decrease your likelihood of breast cancer.

We don't know what causes breast cancer, unfortunately. We know there is a genetic factor as well as an environmental factors to consider, and knowing that we can't do much with genetics, its best to turn to the environment when reducing your risk. Here are some products you should avoid in your home, helping reduce your risk of breast cancer...

  1. BPA-Bisphenol A is a suspected environmental estrogen found in plastic bottles, canned goods (with a lining), and other plastic containers. Look for BPA-free varieties.

  2. Parabens are preservatives found in shampoo, soap, and cosmetics that are thought to be hormone disruptors. Choose products that are free of parabens for all of your beauty needs.

  3. Phthalates - the other "P" to avoid is found in fragrances, lotions and creams. Research has shown that it may contribute to early puberty in girls. Look for phthalate-free options.

  4. Safe Sunscreen - Some sunscreens contain chemical blockers that are believed to have estrogenic properties. Look for sunscreens free of benzophenone, homosalate,and octyl methoxycinnamate. Follow these tips when shopping for safe sun screen.
