Beat Summer Ailments

By Melissa Williams

Summer is fun … but the sunburn, bites, and even increase in yeast infections (yuck!) aren't quite as dandy. We've done the research to come up with your best modes of prevention and treatment.

Did you know that all the time in the pool and specifically in your swimsuit can increase the heat in your nether regions? Be sure to get out of a wet suit quickly, and try adding a bit of baking soda to your bath if itchiness occurs.

Feeling a bit burnt by the sun? Of course aloe will help, but adding some powdered milk to your bathwater, or oatmeal can help soothe the burn, too.

Get steamy. I was surprised to find out that a lot of head colds actually occur in the summer. Our best advice? Add a 5-minute steam to your gym routine or shower. Steam with eucalyptus, which is a natural anti-bacterial, and will help open your air passages.

Soothe with calendula. When we had our kids, I never thought I'd use calendula as often as I do. Scrapes, cuts, burns, even bug bites are alleviated with this natural anti-inflammatory.

Feeling HOT HOT HOT? Make some super cubes. Terese Linke, global education and spa training director for Primavera natural and organic skincare, suggests putting moisturizing or revitalizing toner in an ice cube tray in the freezer. Massage parched skin with the toner cubes to freshen and cool. For a hot day at the pool or beach, Linke suggests storing a bottle of moisturizing refreshing mist in a cooler and spritzing as needed.

Feeling Clogged Pores from the Humidity? Make yourself a revitalizing mask!
