Celeb Mom Style Secrets

By Sarah Preston Gorenstein

Believe it or not, celebrities try just as hard as we do to look good, even when they don't look like they're trying (that thrown-together look actually takes time!). But we found 10 simple style tricks celeb moms use to keep the frumpiness at bay. Hint: It's all about accessorizing.

Give Heels the Boot

Moms need boots made for walking, and no one pulls off a hotter boot than Kourtney Kardashian. Her ubiquitous orange Chanel boots would give any boring outfit a lift with its over-the-top bright color, but notice the heel is low enough that it's wearable for toting around her cutest accessory of all: her son Mason. Style tip: Even us shorter moms can wear over-the-knee boots, as long as they're not over-powering. This one happens to work very well on Kourtney, who is only 5'2". Look for soft leather, suede or even rubber Wellingtons, and consider flats over heels.

Oversized Sunglasses

Famous working moms of multiple kids like Angelina Jolie, Nicole Richie, Reese Witherspoon and Alyson Hannigan shield their tired eyes with a pair of larger-than-life sunglasses. Who's got time to put on a full face of makeup when you're chasing a rambunctious toddler around town? Even the most aggressive paparazzi shot doesn't have a chance of penetrating these oversized designer shades. Try a pair of aviators for an upgrade to rock-star status.

Easy Up 'Dos

Washing and blow-drying your hair every day is a rare luxury with the kiddos demanding all of your available time. Mom of four Heidi Klum makes easy up 'dos, like sleek ponytails and artfully messy buns, look super chic. You'd never know the last time she washed those beautiful blonde locks (and with four kids under her belt, we wouldn't want to).

Fashionable Hats

Not only do hats cover unkempt, in-need-of-a-color-touch-up hair, they're every bit as fashionable as they are functional. We love everything from the fedora and knit beret to the newsboy cap and all-American cowboy hat-whatever works with your style. And, c'mon, couldn't we all use a little wardrobe inspiration from the petite queen of maaaj style statements, mom Rachel Zoe?

Flowy Scarves

Not that Halle Berry needs any help, but her bright orange silk scarf somehow makes even her clunky crutches look cool. See how that scarf effortlessly punches up an otherwise plain T-shirt and slouchy jeans look? It's an all-seasons accessory, too, which makes us love it even more. And with dozens of different ways to wear it, this accessory gives you plenty of bang for your hard-earned buck.

The Mom Bag

Bigger is always better when it comes to your mom (or diaper) bag. But no one said it had to be ugly! Get an oversized hobo bag like Kate Hudson's hippie-chic suede number (with fringe, bonus!) and stuff all your mommy essentials in it. You can go from day to night without having to transfer (read: lose) all your necessary items. Plus, who's going to even notice what you're wearing with a statement bag this chic?

Sweater Wraps

This is not your mom's sweater wrap. Pair it with a tank top and jeans for a walk at the park, or wear it over a maxi dress for a casual night out in the spring. It even goes with wide-leg trousers and a white button-down for work. Choose one that's long or to the waist, belted or no belt; whatever works with your body type. We love them in neutral colors (like gray, shown on Sarah Jessica Parker here) that can be worn again, and again, and again…

Layering Necklaces

Victoria's Secret supermodel and mom Alessandra Ambrosia is sporting a few of our favorite mom trends here: Oversized sunglasses? Check. Flowy silk scarf? Check. Sleek mom bag and maxi skirt? Check, check. But we're in love with her double-layered tassel necklaces. Did you even notice she's sporting a 6-month baby bump underneath all those great accoutrements? Neither did we.

Minimal Makeup

Let's face it, few people can pull off Michelle Williams' perfectly fresh-faced look-but we can emulate her less-is-more approach to makeup. A light foundation or a tinted moisturizer plus mascara can go a long way. Add a little eyeliner and bright red or coral lipstick to give your look extra zing.

Another great eye-popping trick: If you've had one of those sleepless nights, try a stroke of white eye shadow underneath your bottom lashes, sweeping into the corner of your eyes-it'll bring years back to your face without that caked-on eye shadow look.

The Jacket

From cropped leather bomber jackets to fitted asymmetrical blazers, we love the jacket as a casual wardrobe accessory. Paired with an over-sized T-shirt or fitted tank, and leggings or wide-leg jeans, celeb moms like Gwen Stefani, Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Richie have donned this stylish accessory in all its useful and fashionable forms.
