American Eagle Introduces (Maybe Fake) Doggie Clothing Line. It's Fetch.

Pets dressed as humans: Will it ever get old? American Eagle Outfitters doesn't think so. The apparel brand, which famously pranked the Internet with a fake line of jeans around this time last year, has just announced a new collection of hipster doggy clothes.  American Beagle Outfitters, introduced via video "dogumentary" on Monday, features pet-sized products, including crop tops, hoodies, fedoras, statement tees, and — get this — doggy jeggings.

The line of matching pooch and human merchandise is the first one specifically designed for both you and your dog. Dog apparel is no longer limited to just Halloween costumes and cable-knit sweaters because ABO will be offering on-trend items, such as mutt-sized sunglasses, beanies that say "selfie," overalls, and more. “Your dog’s style is another form of expressing your own, and we are thrilled to bring American Eagle fashionable looks to our pups with the debut of American Beagle Outfitters,” Preston Konrad, AE’s style director said. If you find all this hard to believe, you're not alone.

It’s possible (and probable) that this is all just an elaborate April Fool’s Day joke. While the press release claims that ABO is launching in spring 2014, an AE representative tells Yahoo Shine that they “look forward to sharing more about the collection” and will “be in touch next week with further details.” Incidentally, next week happens to include April 1. Around the same time last year, the company staged a viral prank, announcing plans to release Skinny Skinny jeans — a sprayed-on version of denims that came in a can.  The faux line, posted as a video on YouTube, earned over one million views, plus kudos for its creative approach to viral marketing.

Even if this is a trick, there's actually demand in the marketplace for canine attire of this kind, according to the overwhelmingly positive response to ABO on Twitter.

If the furball garments don't come to fruition at least the brand is still doing some good for dogs. Every customer who signs up for the American Beagle waitlist will receive 20 percent off at American Eagle, with $1 of each order benefiting the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), and the brand will match up to $100,000 as a donation to the charity.

Now we'll just have to wait until April 1 to see if this line is "fur" real. In the meantime, one thing is certain:  Dogs look surprisingly good in hats.
