3 Smart New Ways to Dry-Style Your Hair

If you’re the kind of person who feels sad that wedding season is over because you love how bouncy and tousled your hair is after taking it out of a 30-pin updo, dry-styling sprays are for you. They’re like dry shampoo but with a little something extra. In our November issue, Allure contributing editor Meirav Devash wrote about three that will help you get hair that’s big, glossy, or soft without going anywhere near your shower (or a bridesmaid’s dress).

1. Dry texturizers. If you sprayed dry shampoo all over, it would give your hair a matte finish. Dry texturizers create lived-in waves (using polymers) without compromising shine. “Traditional texturizing sprays are for damp hair and would make dry hair sticky or gummy, but many of the new dry-texturizing sprays contain oils or silicones to offset the polymers,” says cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson. We like L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It High Lift Creation Spray.

2. Dry oils. “They contain the lightest silicones and a lower concentration of oils, diluted with other ingredients, like stabilizers, so you can use them on dry hair without making it greasy,” says Robinson. “They have just enough oil to make hair softer than a shine spray would.” We like dry-oil sprays, like Alterna Bamboo Smooth Kendi Dry Oil Micromist, because the fine mist makes it nearly impossible to overdo.

3. Dry conditioners. The length of your hair starts looking dry right around the time your roots get oily. That’s where dry conditioners, such as Serge Normant Meta Revive Dry Conditioner, come in. “They deposit just enough oils and emollients to make dry hair softer and shinier, like a deep-conditioning treatment,” says Robinson. You can flatiron or curl your hair after using one and the conditioning agents will help prevent breakage.
