Writer pledges to eat nothing but Chinese takeout every day for a year

    (Thinkstock)And I thought Morgan Spurlock’s 30-day McDonald’s binge was crazy.

The Village Voice’s Victoria Bekiempis will be eating Chinese takeout every day in 2012 — and it’s not to prove that it’s bad for us.

“I wanted to cover something that gets ignored,” the 24-year-old New York City journalist told MSNBC. “Chinese takeout is a culinary institution that needs to be discussed — it gets pushed aside because attention is given to ritzier places and food that seems more out of the ordinary.”

In her series “Year of the Takeout,” she chronicles her daily adventures in takeout, with each meal coming from a different New York Chinese eatery.

At six weeks in she’s still going strong, despite the often-mediocre meals.

“My expectation is that I’m going to get a lot of run-of-the-mill stuff, but it’s the diamonds in the rough make this project worthwhile,” she said.

Her food adventure is taking her to new areas of the city, exposing her to places and people she wouldn’t encounter otherwise. By the end of the year, she’ll have some pretty incredible takeout expertise to share with readers.

What food-type-for-a-year project would you be most eager to tackle?

    I’m
pretty sure there are more than 365 ice cream flavours in my city. I could be convinced to taste them all.

health canada has determined that msg is not a health hazard. check their site.

The key word in Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is 'sodium'. May not be a 'hazard', but still not good for you!!
      • Sean Lin 3 months ago
Sure MSG contains sodium, but its not used at as high concentrations as salt and the mass percent of sodium in MSG is three times less than in sodium chloride(table salt).

James T., I agree with you 100%.While my daughter was in college, one of the gals there was straight from China and had brought her own herbs and 'medicines' for different things. My daughter happened to come down with a cold and the girl told her green tea. My daughter was going to buy some until her friend told her that what we have here is not really their kind of green tea. The next day my daughter was literally fully recovered. The foods there are definitely better there than here. We go to a specific restaurant one town over that serves only the REAL and authentic oriental food cooked when you order it. It is absolutely fantastic and we have found nothing fattening or anything and you take your drive home which is 15 minutes for us and you are hungry again. We will only eat the authentic food not like Mandarin although that is a treat for our youngest now ahd again. :)

i miss Le Chinois in Hamilton...Mandarin is a fun treat, it certainly has a large variety of food

Actually there are few Chinese super markets in GTA where you can get authentic Chinese foodstuffs. Preparing Chinese food is easy and fast, a lot cheaper then making western food.

OH COME ON....you can't compare Chinese food to America's fast food!...The America's fast foods are mostly junk foods...just look at all the fat peoples around you.

Exactly, just look at all the CHINESE eating chinese food every day of their lives. They aren't all of them fat blobs.

Most of her take outs are NOT really Chinese, DNAs are altered to fit western taste buds. Chinese families don't eat food like that at all. BTW, there is no such things as Egg Rolls and Chicken Balls.
      • VincentA 3 months ago
Um actually egg rolls exist... Hokkien (an area in China) people call it lun pia... but yes, I think the fillings are different in America

If it was affordable i would do the same, but hey dinner for 4 goes for about $46 over here
      • Lita 3 months ago
Wow! $46!! I wanna know where that chinese take-out place is located! Where I live; unless you opt for the buffet, you're paying about $100 for a family of 4! AND, it's really not very good!! =(

Do it yourselves. Chinese food is easy to prepare and a lot cheaper then western meals.

Does that mean China will take over all of North America's fast food restaurant joints?
Well in this case it looks like China will take over Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers.

Chinese take-out is not real Chinese food. Chinese take-out is a Westernized version of Chinese cuisine. there is so much variety in Chinese cuisine, considering how huge China is, for example, there are 23 provinces, 4 municipalities (ie. Beijing), 5 administrative regions (ie. Xinjiang) & hong kong, plus Taiwan. in all these places, there is also the local cuisine & etc. so there is a ton of variety in Chinese cuisine, not the typical western Chinese fried rice & sweet & sour pork. in fact, Chinese people don't eat the kind food offered at Chinese take-outs.

With the writer announcing her plans. This is just a way to get free food for a year. Every restaurant she visits will allready know her & she will get thebest of the best. ( Pretty good idea on her part ) The proper way was she should have done the project 1st, then announce what she did & write her article.

I love Chinese, Thai and Japanese foods. Next would be East Indian and Mexican. All in moderation of course.

Sure hope you don't have an msg allergy!

Stupid publicity stunt. Eating any takeout for a year only shows you've got nothing for brains. Let's get some before and after photos. It won't look so fun a year later when you're a fat piece of lard. Why don't you just join an eating contest instead?

I love chinese food and it is so healthy when it is authentic but watch out for GMO corn, soy and canola oils for those dishes that are not prepared with sesame or peanuts oils. Gmo fed meats and fish and so on.....
