    Would You Go Shampoo-Free?

Shampoo is a relatively new invention. In the early 20th century, when water supplies in cities became more alkaline, shampoo was developed to work better than soap, which people had heretofore used to wash their hair, with mineralized water. However, in order to make an effective product, shampoo wound up being a fairly harsh cleanser that strips all the natural oils from hair. That’s why conditioner was invented—to replenish the natural oils stripped by shampoo. Of late, more and more women have decided to eschew the potentially damaging ingredients in commercial hair products and gone “’poo free,” meaning they no longer use shampoo to wash their hair.

Wardrobe Basics Every Woman Should Own

In lieu of soap for the hair, many shampoo-free advocates simply cleanse their hair with a baking soda solution and rinse with an apple-cider vinegar solution. Other ‘poo-free folks only rinse their hair with water. This regimen is said to cause the head’s sebaceous glands to produce just the right amount of oil, which leads to a happier and healthier scalp and ultra-lustrous locks. Proponents of the ‘poo-free lifestyle say their hair has never looked better!

But we want to know what you think: Would you ever stop washing your hair and go ‘poo free?

All of you people who are worried about chemicals and your body, have you ever wondered what exactly is in your pads and tampons? Absorbent means chemicals, white means bleach. The risk of toxic shock syndrome is because of the chemicals in the tampons, the bleach.

the ph of the skin is 4.5-5.5 making it acidic, the ph of apple cider vinegar is between 4.25-5 making it a perfect cleaning agent. I am a hairstylist and after reading this and researching a little bit I'm seriously going to try it out.

I have always maintained that shampoo/conditioner products should be used on a maximum of twice a week.Frequent use will result in dry scalp and thereafter dandruff problem. These commercial product contains very potent chemicals that do damage to hair follicles and scalp. Rinsing hair with plain water will keep hair healthier.Personally, I don't use soap for hair wash either !

baking soda and vinegar is acidic... look at what happens when you mix the two together. apparently it corrodes your hair, and ill never use it again. personally, i only use a tiny bit of shampoo on my roots, i have curly hair naturally, and ever since ive stopped shampooing the ends my hair isnt frizzy at all.

shampoo and conditioner (professional ones) are acid balanced to match the ph of our skin and hair. A normal ph for skin is 4.5-5.5 which is acidic, like vinegar. Even wonder how they make baby shampoo with a "no tear" formula? They give it a high alkalinity, to match the alkalinity of our tears. It destroys the hair shaft though, over time(just a fun fact). I am a hairstylist so of course I am an advocate for products, but if you find something that works then go with it, in this economy it's not easy to afford high end, and most drug store brands such as pantene will destroy your hair. If you absolutely have to use shampoo and conditioner, I suggest using it every other day, and invest in a clarifying shampoo to use once a week. It will lift off anything left behind by conditioner, hairspray or even pollution.

7.4, the ph of tears, when a ph of 7 is neutral, isn't extremely basic. And will it not be balanced if you use something acidic after? It sounds as if the curly girl method would work well for White Kitty, you use certain kinds of conditioner as your "shampoo".
You also don't let the baking soda and vinegar get in contact with each other. A rinse means it's a solution, something you pour on your hair, not that you rinse the baking soda off with it (use water for that).

I am a black woman who went natural (no chemical processes at all) a year ago. Since that time, I have used apple cider vinegar and lukewarm water to wash my hair. My hair is healthy, shiny, and strong for the first time ever! It has worked for me.

ACV is too acidic to be used on hair undiluted.
      • Shannon 9 months ago
no its not it matches the ph of the skin
      • Bridget 9 months ago
And it doesn't match the ph of your hair dumbass! Who cares about skin when you're using it on your hair. duuurrrr

I read lots of comments and most of them sounded good so i will probably try it. I was just wondering what was in the vinegar rinse? Is it just vinegar?
      • KaylenP 8 months ago
1 tablespoon vinegar to 1 cup water

If everyone just read the labels, they would be surprised what crap we are putting onto our bodies, most do not bother to read what is there.... just lazy!

Interesting article, my hair conditioner supposedly hydrates my hair, however there are four different types of alcohols in the ingredients. Now I am not an expert on hair, but doesn't alcohol dry out hair? Going to try this 'just water' thing, if it works, it will save me $100/year.

Yahoo User - fluoride is a specific compound unto itself. It does not contain lead.
Beer and egg shampoo is the way to go.
      • KaylenP 8 months ago
So the egg would be the shampoo and the beer the rinse?

      I found this on http://untraditionalhome.com/?p=663

I fill a jar with baking soda and water–making a paste (I store the jar plus a squirt bottle full of vinegar in the shower). I use that to scrub my hair then rinse with water. Afterwards I pour vinegar over my head (upside down so it doesn’t get in my eyes) and rinse again.

I have super thick long hair and it takes about 2 Tbs regular shampoo for me to cover my hair. I have found that the same goes for the baking soda paste: 2 Tbs baking soda/water then a cup or so of vinegar.

What is the mix of baking soda/water and apple-cider vinegar solution? Worth a try.

I recently started using Fruictis biodegrable shampoo and conditioner and what a difference! No heavy build - no need to use anti-residue shampoo anymore. My hair feels light and clean and healthy. I'll stick with that! Also, have a hard time believeing that if you don't use shampoo the right amount of oil stays in your hair?? Some people have very oily hair no matter what they do.

Funny, I just read about this somewhere else. Decided to try it. I've been 5 days shampoo free, and my hair has never looked better. I have really oily hair normally, so I decided to do the baking soda/water mix every night... so far, so good. My hair hasn't been a big grease ball at the end of the day like it normally is. I mixed 2 tbsp baking soda to about 700ml of water. Haven't tried the vinegar rinse yet.

I wish I could do this but my hair is very thin and the slightest natural oil build-up that would make any other person's hair shine and look lustrous makes mine flat and lifeless! I'm miserable when my hair is flat!

I've heard about this and people swear by it. I think it takes a long time to start, but your hair feels great.

I would like to be able to not wash my hair as often as I do. If this method worked for a clean and beautiful head of hair I would certainly use this method along with a good wash at least once a week. I can not stand an itchy scalp!
