World’s first anti-wrinkle pill may actually work

Many of us have tried rubbing anti-aging creams on our faces and bodies to eliminate wrinkles, but what if taking a pill could yield better results? New Scientist is reporting that a new three-a-day "gene food" capsule may be a more affordable, less painful alternative to Botox, and possibly the first pill of its kind to succeed in banishing wrinkles from the inside out.

Scientist John Casey and his team at the Unilever labs in Sharnbrook, UK are using natural food extracts like vitamin E, vitamin C, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from fish oil, isoflavones from soya, and lycopene to activate genes that smooth out skin. According to New Scientist, prior to meopause, oestrogen production declines and proteases enzymes work harder, which removes elastic collagen faster than it is replaced. Oestrogen receptor are also not working as well, which slows down collagen production. Overall this makes the skin more wrinkly, but the extracts in this pills will change the behavior of certain genes and keep the collagen coming.

Unilever commissioned four different research groups to test the pills along with 480 post-menopausal women in the UK, France, and Germany. New Scientist was shown physical results after women took the pill three times a day for 14 weeks: crow's feet are said to become 10% shallower on average during that time, although some testers found a 30% decrease in wrinkles. Researchers advise taking the pills for at least three months to see the best results.

Overall, researchers feel optimistic about the new drug and the double-blind testing that's been done thus far. "What matters is the clinical data, and they show there are reduced wrinkles in the treated group," Richard Weller, a dermatologist at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, UK, told New Scientist. "I'm not aware of any [other] oral treatments that do this." David Sarwer of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, told New Scientist that the results thus far are great but "we need a number of studies in this area, with similar results and published in the peer-reviewed literature, before we have a sufficient body of evidence to suggest that these supplements positively impact facial appearance."

Nichola Rumsay of the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England in Bristol told New Scientist that while a pill like this would be less invasive than plastic surgery, we shouldn't necessarily be viewing wrinkles as something that need to be eradicated. "We should be accepting wrinkles gracefully. Someone should develop a pill to stop people worrying about their appearance," she said. "That would make people a lot happier."

Unilever will launch the capsules next month in 44 spas that it co-owns in the UK, Spain and Canada, and they don't need any special approval since the extracts used are already in use and the company isn't claiming they benefit your health. It will be interesting to see how well the pills sell, and if they make it to the US soon after.

Would you try an anti-wrinkle pill?

Anything out of a bottle is going to have some negative effects, whether those effects will be noticeable now or in the future, who knows? I say, it's not worth the risk.

I'm sure it will take years for any negative effects to kick in.. by that time we'll be ready to croak from old age.. but we'll look good though.. LOL.

I don't understand why women feel the need to fill their bodies with and cover their bodies in all this anti-aging crap! My mom is in her late fifties, all she does is wash her face, moisturize (with regular ph balanced facial moiturizer, or with cucumber peels if she's had cucumber that day) and drinks plenty of water and eats a good balanced diet, and the woman has the skin of someone in their mid thirties. It's all the crap that's causing you to age faster. I'll avoid the carcinogens thanks, and embrace it when I start showing some lines and wrinkles or some grey hairs.

Well buddy... when that times come for you, you'll be looking at a way to get rid of those wrinkles too. Even with cucumbers and whatever else your mom is using, she'll get them like everyone else. and so will you.

It appears these pills cause a person to load up on things that we've been told are good for you. However, the old adage "too much of a good thing" comes to mind. Even things that are good for you become toxic if you eat more than your body needs. I also remember the days when doctors were warning people to be careful about taking vitamins because taking too much can be just as harmful as not having enough!

oh for sure ...but that would put the other antiaging remedies aoutta bizness and they aint gonna allow that to happen are they????

I think people need to accept getting older, wrinkles are part of life just live life

no rights for woman or africans was "just the way it was" too. If we can live happier (and for a lot of people, happier includes looking the age we feel, instead of looking older) than why shouldnt we, especially if there's no danger in it?

this isn't some feminist plight it's a fact of life people get old people who are 40 shouldn't pretend to be 20, they had their time to be 20 20 years just enjoy the where you are know and embrace your age the cycle of life is only a bad thing if you let it be a bad thing

Jeannie, are you actually comparing human rights to aging? Come on now. Simple Logic is right: we should accept having wrinkles as getting older. It's not a bad thing to have wrinkles. It's vanity that has been bloated due to eating up whatever the media has construed as being beautiful. Why can't we feel beautiful as we are instead of competing to match some ideal we see in magazines that doesn't even exist. Cindy Crawford was quoted in her hayday saying, "I don't even look like Cindy Crawford".

before an after photos that are shown exhibit marginal differences that could even be a slight photography "blur".....and even if.....the differences are so insignificant that a slight make-up wouldnt fix......and not only costs of pill but long-term side effects to be considered too..worth it?....yes if "snake" oil can be sold so can this pill

Good skin care and a healthy diet have kept my wrinkles at bay. At almost 50 people ask me what I am doing to keep my skin looking so good - who needs pills!

the best hope we have of having nice skin at my age. is to have the old skin sanded off and wash it as many as three times a day. and stay out of the sun.

It'd be nice to have something like a magical pill that makes our wrinkles disappear, but really- what is the cost? There must be a side effect or something. Just because it has " natural" ingredients, or things we already consume, doesn't mean it's ACTUALLY good for us. The best thing we can do, ( and I am a makeup artist) is moisturize, cleanse, eat well, take vitamins, avoid habits that are damaging to skin and body , for example: smoking, long exposure to direct sunlight and tanning beds. You can use makeup tricks to appear younger, or even play up your features to look more youthful but in all honesty, we are all going to age regardless, and will wrinkle. Tis life. Besides wrinkles are memories, why erase them?
