What Not to Buy at H&M

H&M is a budget-conscious fashionista’s dream. But buyer beware; some items aren’t worth buying at even the lowest prices due to poor fit, low quality, or better bargains elsewhere. Here’s what we suggest you skip when shopping at one of our favorite affordable fashion outlets.

    1. Lingerie

Though plenty of us like to indulge in pretty underthings, bras and underwear’s most important characteristic is function! While H&M’s lingerie selection looks nice, most of their products are made from synthetic materials (elastane and polyamide, to be specific), which are fine for T-shirts and dresses, but not so great for our lady parts because synthetic materials don’t breathe as well as real cotton and can cause problems in these particular areas. Additionally, the last thing a woman wants is to get poked and prodded by the underwire in her bra, and H&M’s selection doesn’t offer the best fit, sometimes leading to discomfort.

    2. Swimsuits

Much like lingerie, swimsuits are also items that need to both fashionable and fully functional. H&M’s swim collection is definitely stylish, but when it comes to clothes that are one slip or see-through material away from public indecency, we prefer to buy pieces from stores that have specialize in or have more experience with swimwear, such as Victoria’s Secret or Vix.

    Swimsuits That Flatter Every Shape

    3. Business Suits

We’re not fans of the “work wear” concept in general, though we certainly understand the need to stay within a dress code. But even if your job requires ultra-conservative attire, H&M’s selection leaves much to be desired. Their dress shirts are often made from difficult-to-iron synthetic materials that are uncomfortable and won’t last through many machine washes. And though we like their blazers as everyday items, their suits aren’t flattering and are made from low-quality material that wrinkles and wears down easily. Take our advice: if you need serious work wear, invest in quality suits that will stand the test of time. (We like budget-friendly selections from Ann Taylor, Banana Republic or J. Crew, or investment pieces from Theory.) You’ll look and feel much better—not to mention save money in the long run!

Blouses That Will Take You From Day to Night

    4. Basic Knits

This one might seem counterintuitive, but in our experience we haven’t been thrilled with H&M’s basic items like T-shirts, tanks, and other staples. Their prices are unbeatable ($5.95 for a basic jersey tank!) but the pieces don’t always fit well and certainly don’t last very long. A couple of wears and washes is it all it takes to stretch or disfigure an item. And even though they’re cheap, if you’re looking for basic items that you want to wear for multiple seasons, look elsewhere. Investing in a quality set of camisoles and T-shirts will make a world of difference to your wardrobe!

The Best Basics Every Woman Should Own

    5. Fringe Items

H&M is great at producing on-trend fashion at a low prices, but we’re less enamored with their ancillary items, like makeup and umbrellas. One of our staff members couldn’t resist buying an umbrella while shopping at the store, only to have it break five minutes into using it on a rainy day!

Gadgets and Décor That Will Make You Giggle

    6.  Gold-Colored Jewelry

We’re not jewelry snobs—plastics are just as great as precious metals for our colorful baubles! But we’ve had disappointing results with H&M’s gold-colored jewelry. Whether it’s a metal bangle or plastic beaded bracelet, the gold always invariably changes color with wear or come off completely. Our concern isn’t so much the color change itself (bronze is a great color too), but more so the fact that whatever is rubbing off is doing so on our skin!

no. what about jeans?! and shirts... and dresses and skirts. main parts of the young adult section is still okay. allllll jewlery excluding the gold is available, and also cardigans and sweaters! if you want quality clothing, you wouldn't be shopping in stores like H&M, or more like if you know that the quality is low, you clearly wouldn't buy WORK clothes from there..... and lingerie!!! I mean I'm not saying its bad to do it because i know some people work on budgets but those things should be bought at more quality stores anyway!
      • licketysplit 9 months ago
that is correct. Only consider shopping there if you have plenty of money to replenish your wardrobe every few months.

i agree with everything on this list though, except basic knitsand swimsuits. their umbrellas break from a short gust of wind.

I like this article and agree with it on all points!! I too have been shopping there less and less even though it's inexpensive the style an quality is getting worse and worse. It's sad cause I liked shopping there!! Old Navy is another one that really suck the clothing is has no structure or fit to a woman's body, everything looks boxy, no fun!!!

and don't forget The Gap. They too are bringing in more inferior clothing all the time.

I am not a fan of H&M but how can such an article like this can be posted to ruin other brand. For the price they are selling, what do you expect. Not every one can afford BR & AT.

I find it baffling that this article was actually part of the headlines or on the front page. Is the writer paid to put down H&M? I mean, you don't need an expert to "research" and tell you that quality sometimes needs to be expensive. Obviously a $5 tshirt versus a $500 jacket...well heck, any one of us can be an expert then. It's good to publish articles that are meant to help the consumer choose wisely, but what about liability issues? You are giving H&M such bad rep that I won't be surprised if this article is removed.

If I understand the term correctly it’s only libellous if what’s written is untrue and in this article that’s not the case. H&M does sell poor quality merchandise compared with other retailers. And why would you compare a t-shirt with a $500 jacket. That’s like comparing and apple to a stake dinner. Why not compare a t-shirt from H&M to that of a retailer that sells higher quality garments. This article might actually be helpful for people who have not shopped at an H&M before, or for say, a dad who does little shopping and wants to buy a gift card for his daughter or something like that. At least they will know they might want to think twice before shopping at H&M

Probably written by some employee that H&M fired.

Er, ever heard of caveat emptor? Means ``let the buyer beware``. Not to throw cliches at people, but if the price is cheap than probably so is the quality. However, everyone knows that H&M, Le Crapeau, Forever XXI, Suzy Sheir etc. is about wearing the latest 5 min trend and for their prices, you shouldn`t expect the item to last too long. Those stores serve a purpose, for people who are either very young and trendy and/or on a low budget. It`s sort of like eating at McDonalds and expecting a gourmet experience. What shocks me is the out and out smearing of this brand, when it`s no worse than many. Sounds like the writer had a bad customer experience and is exercising the old ``pen is mightier than the sword`` revenge.

        Well said ^_^

Bull, Who cares at these prices. I buy cloths from a lot of different retailers. High end stores and the budget stores, if I like it and I can afford it I am going to buy it. H and M is one of my favorites for fashion, in either the tees or the dresses. Who in the heck cares if it does not last forever at $5.95 to $29.95 With the way the trends come and go, if my $6.00 tee is not in great shape in 2 years I will donate it or throw it out. Believe me readers just because the price tag has a higher price does not mean it is always better.

No one should be complaining about an article that is watching out for the consumer! Those stores make millions and millions of dollars this wont hurt H & M bc millions and millions of people won't be lucky enough to see this article. They sell cheap t-shirts for 6 bucks that cost them nothing to make. They are still making a huge profit selling us clothes that may fall apart. It's not a good deal if it loses its shape or falls apart. I've spent 30 dollars and more on a wicked t shirts that I have had for years and the more I wear them and wash them the cooler they look. One is ten years old. It cost 40 bucks and looks awesome still. H &M t's not so much lol

I forgot, can you do the same list with la senza, la vie en rose, aldo,….?
    • lilyjoy  •  9 months ago
for the last year I have been buying my clothes from H&M, even for my children! I love the store, and Have not had a single issue with any of my items! I am not a jewlery type person, how ever .... if you buy gold coloured jewlery from any place you will have the same issue!
    • Cls  •  9 months ago
A common complaint in many, many stores is that the clothes do not last. Buttons fall off, zippers break, shrinkage, lost shape or colour. It is truly disappointing that the quality is so bad in clothes. Nothing lasts and it hurts my wallet. Someone needs to come out with better options. How often does something make it to hand-me-down status nowdays??? NEVER in my house.

      They're saying don't buy anything at H&M, that's basically what they're saying.
    • Mary  •  9 months ago
I really appreciate this article. Thank you for letting the consumer know what not to waste our money on. I don't like shopping there any more but bc the clothes look as cheap as they are to buy and it's true the fabrics they use are brutal and lose their shape. Their pants are ok but you have to try them on bc their sizes are pretty off with some of their pants. My boyfriend tried on a pair of pants there that were a size 32 they fit pretty well on the way to the cash we found another pair and he grabbed a 32 but didnt try them on. When he got home and tried to put on the pants they were skin tight. We laughed our asses off! They were more like a 28!

H&M's policy on damaged items, as explained by their head office: they charge you full price, and if you can't fix it on your own, you can ask for a refund. Cheapness is a trend with this company. I deserve better.
    • Jamie  •  9 months ago
I don't fully agree with this... sure there are the pieces and items that cost under $10, but that's what disposable fashion is! When you're tired of it, and want to keep with the trends, you won't feel bad switching things up when you didn't spend a ton of money. 5 years from now, I won't be wearing that $5.95 tank top anymore... who does???

I would have to agree their lingerie does not fit well, but not everyone can afford expensive swimwear from Victoria's secret. And many of their bikinis ARE lined, FYI.

I wear their suit pieces to the office myself on a daily basis, I would have to say that they really aren't that bad! Their dress pants are the only ones I wear because they fit great, and last forever! And what wrinkles???? The trouser lines are crisp, even fresh out of the dryer. They are even started making trousers in size 2, which is great for the petite and very flattering. I'm not sure which section the writer bought their suit in, perhaps in the maternity section?

Old Navy or Joe Fresh have far worse quality than H&M, I'm shocked an article wasn't written about their products! H&M's slogan is "Fashion and Quality at the best price", and I certainly think they've lived up to that.
    • Kendra  •  9 months ago
I love H & M. It is probably true that the cheaper things won't last long for the most part but I have not experienced this with things I own from there.
    • Art  •  9 months ago
I hate H&M, people who works there are just posers and looser...
90% of times I've been there, people leave unsatisfied.
Sales advisers are waaaaay to bitchy and cranky, shoppers come there to shop, not to get slapped with attitude by people who works at H&M..
      Anyways
Hopefully this company go bankrupt. AMEN!

I buy clothes for my kid from H&M all the time and find the quality and the fashion way better than most of the stores out there. There are many stores that sell crapy clothes... how about XXI Fotrever, Suzi Sheir, Costa Blanca.... need to say more?!?!? how about Le Chateau? their quality is the worst of all brands mentioned above and the prices are like for high end stuff..... I personally think whoever wrote this article has no clue on the clothing industry and is complete idiot... how about you make some more reserch and shop around more to compare different brands before post something so rediculous.
The truth is H&M is not high end store, thats why is cheap, but it is trendy and is well worth the money to buy something from there, wear it one season, toss it in the garbage and when the new trends come around next season go again to H&M and buy some more treandy clothes without going bancrupsy
