Video: Fat cat's diet inspires support

If you’re currently facing the challenge of losing weight, take heart – you’re in adorable company. A lovable feline named Fat Boy from Moose Jaw, Sask., is also attempting to shed pounds with the help of the Moose Jaw Humane Society, and he’s gaining support via the society’s Facebook page. Fat Boy, who was considered obese at 10.4 kilograms (23 pounds), was put on a strict diet by the Humane Society’s staff. Each Friday, staff members weigh the kitty and post his progress on their Facebook page for fans to follow, reports the CBC. As of Friday, August 26, Fat Boy has dropped a little over one pound. Not huge progress for a 5-week diet, but progress none the less. And the cat’s loyal Facebook fans are offering loads of support, wishing him luck and encouraging him to keep it up.

While it’s unlikely that this online encouragement will steel at Boy’s own resolve to succeed in his diet (perhaps this goes without saying), studies do show that humans who have social support in their weight-loss attempts are more successful in shedding pounds and keeping them off. Perhaps Fat Boy has become something of a celebrity because we relate to his story and the support his fans have offered. That, or it’s because he’s super cute.
