U.K. scientists claim to have found cheapest meal

Times are tough in Canada, but is the economy bad enough to eat a toast sandwich?

Scientists from the Royal Society of Chemistry in the U.K. are calling the sandwich (which costs the equivalent of 12 cents Canadian), the cheapest meal.

It is a slice of toast between two pieces of buttered bread with salt and pepper. Although according to the Guardian, it can also be one untoasted piece between two toasted pieces.

"I've tried it and it's surprisingly nice to eat and quite filling," says Dr. John Emsley of the RSC in a statement. "I would emphasize that toast sandwiches are also good at saving you calories as well as money, provided you only have one toast sandwich for lunch and nothing else."

According to the RSC this sandwich has 330 calories, 9.5g of protein, 12g of fat, 55g of carbohydrate and contains vitamins A, B1, B3, B3 and D. To cut calories even more, people can opt for margarine instead of butter.

The meal may sound strange, but it has appeared in British culture before. It first showed up in the best-selling book, Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management, 150 years ago.

The scientists chose this meal because they want to help the country through the harder times, which they say are to come.

"Given the stern days we are yet to experience, we decided to go for an unknown dish that requires little money and little time," Emsley says in a statement.

Melissa Little of the British Dietetic Association tells the BBC, for not much extra money people can add an egg, sardines or vegetables to the sandwich.

If anyone knows of a cheaper meal, the RSC is offering $320 (200 pounds) to anyone who can come up with a meal for less.

Exactly what I was thinking, lol! I was also wondering if the 12 cents takes into account the electricity to toast the bread?

Right! It will keep you alive, just like "bread and water" in the dungeon.
Just because it is food, does not make it a MEAL.

It takes a "Scientist" to come up with this? Nothing more interesting or important to study? Maybe a bit of a slow period for scientists these days? Would it really have cost that much more to put something, anything, between the slices of bread?

this is stupid.......in so many ways.

If it only costs the equivalent of 12 cents Canadian for three slices of bread in the U. K. then we Canadians are getting ripped off again for a loaf of bread. The best we can do in the grocery store this year is between $2 and $2.50 per loaf on sale so thats 2.25/16 slices= .14 each for a total cost of 42 cents per serving plus margarine/butter and electricity. Our cost in Canada for 22 lbs. of flour is around $16.00 or 73 cents per pound. You can buy flour at Walmart in the US for 39 cents per pound in 5 lb. bags. Perhaps you could write a factual story about this Jordan. Please do some better research in future or start writing articles for the comic strips.

Times are tough in Canada? When were they not? I remember the same thiing was said in the 70's,80's, 90's and unemployment is always a political football. There is always the delusion that former times were easier such as the current generation's evolving myth that somehow Baby Boomers had it easier discounting the fact that our sheer numbers made competition for jobs, schooling, housing much keener than now. Next it will be competition for pensions with the government trying to disqualify as many as possible or delay us hoping we die before we collect our due as citizens. This news is as stale as that sandwich sounds. Bread in bread sandwich! I know just what to drink with it. Just mix a little water in your water. Makes a refreshing drink.

This doesn't reflect the full cost of the meal. Food such as this is what is driving our health care costs through the ceiling. This meal promotes osteoporosis, allergies, heart problems, increases overall inflammation, and invites a host of other illnesses.
    • blahblahblah  •  6 months ago
yeah , this is what you tell the poor . Next it will be "let them eat cake"

Ya, times are tough because crooked bankers, traders and politicians get rewarded with bonuses, and bailed out when (they) fail with other peoples money! (They) give raises to themselves to keep up with the rate of inflation while everyone else has to take cuts or endure austerity measures, so that (their) standard of living can be maintained. To add insult to injury, they use the balance to buy bombs, bullets and useless fighter jets to kill mothers and children in other countries where the right to peacefull assembly and protest isn't permitted; just like it isn't allowed here; what a bunch of hypocrites!

Excuse me, but my toast is burning and my tap water is getting warm....

The cheapest and by far the most healthiest meals your going to find is ones that you grow in your garden and foraged for in the wilderness.
A pack of seeds costs a couple of bucks. With TLC and time you will have organic bushels of food. Let a few go to seed and now you have free seeds for the following year. Maybe trade some of your crop with a neighbor who may have planted some thing you didn't.
Hows that for cheap or even free? Makes good neighbors too.
Wild food has been studied and proven to be full of nutritional value, far more then that of food in the store. The way food is supposed to be.

12 ce3nts for 3 slices of bread ?? Where, I want 100,000 of these loaves asap. I looked at 3 different breads we have in our home and the least expensive was around 12 cents PER slice. And it is the store brand too.
