The Fat-Burning Exercise that Doesn’t Involve Working Out

The easy step that will seriously help you lose weight. The easy step that will seriously help you lose weight.

Okay, we know New Year's resolutions tend to peter out by March, but January is still prime time for making them happen. Vowed to tone up? We've got an easy new trick for you to try and it has nothing to do with logging extra hours at the gym: Write down your feelings.

Women who keep a diary are more likely to lose weight than those who don't, according to a joint, all-women study from Stanford University and Canada's Renison University College at the University of Waterloo. In the study, researchers asked half of participants to write for 15 minutes about the things that are important to them, like family, relationships, and music. The other half were told to write about why something they don't care about might be important to someone else.

Researchers checked in on the women over the next four months, and the women who wrote about things that were important to them lost an average of 3.4 pounds. The women who wrote about things that weren't important to them actually gained 2.7 pounds.

What's the connection? Scientists theorized that we tend to feel good about ourselves when we take time to mull over something we value. As a result, we're less likely to try to lift our mood by eating fattening foods.

Our advice: Take time to jot down your thoughts when you get home from work-that's usually when most of us have the urge to snack. Odds are, you'll skip the pre-dinner nosh.

OK I gave this a try. When I got home I actually wrote for 20min. Unfortunatly it made me hungry, and I raided the fridge.
My first journal entry was: Top 10 toppings for ice cream.
Tomorrow's topic: Being creative with biscuts and gravy.

Food is not a substitute for a good relationship !, when a person is unhappy they tend to : eat too much or drink too much, shop too much . None of the above cure the problem, you will not find the answer in the bottom of a beer glass, that's my experience.

No, but a wine glass? Maybe..

I think the only way to loose weight by writing is by writing down the number of calories your eating and try to bring that number down !!! Everything else is garbage info....

Have plenty of loving / sex from a good loving relationship with a partner beats going to the gym its more enjoyable LOL !

What if your spouse is medically unable to have relations? Nobody ever considers that possibility. Everyone constantly poking each other in the ribs and waggling their eyebrows *nudge-nudge-wink-wink* ahahaha - Well, some people have to silently deal with this problem while everyone treats it like it's a great big joke. I got really sick of it.

I was an extremely fit athletic type and everyone thought I must be having great sex and blah blah blah - no one knew my pain. I'm almost afraid to go back to the gym and re-create that level of fitness. Co-workers and acquaintances make subtle sexual hints. Strangers come up to me in the street.

It would have been a good idea to explain the facts behind this. This is the same reason why kissing is burning as much calories as running. This is called stimulation. When someone thinks about good things for a couple minutes, his brain releases neurotransmitters and hormones that will cause excitement and excitement causes energy burning.

You guys just don't know what you're talking about.

Yes, because that toned woman they pictured along with the title link is really toned and firm looking like that, not because she is running her guts out, but because she later goes home and spills her guts out to her diary. Psshhhh, Geeze. Whatever you say cosmo. I'm calling B.S on this article, though.

    • kitsboy  •  Vancouver, British Columbia  •  4 months ago
LOL let me clarify this for you..you will not, I repeat NOT lose weight keeping a diary unless you are keeping track of days you're excercising in your diary. I also think dwelling on emotional things in your life that may stop you from eating is a stone throw away from having an eating disorder.
