PFCs from Non-stick Pans and Food Containers Could Make Vaccines Less Effective (STUDY)

PFCs may make certain vaccines less effective. Is your child at risk?PFCs may make certain vaccines less effective. Is your child at risk?Certain vaccines may be much less effective for kids who have been exposed to high levels of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), a group of chemicals used to make materials stain-, water-, wrinkle- and flame-resistant, a new study shows.

Given that the chemicals are found in many common household goods -- including pizza boxes, carpets, and non-stick pans -- more children than expected may be at risk.

The study, which was published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that children with high amounts of PFCs in their bloodstreams produced fewer antibodies after receiving vaccines for Diphtheria and Tetanus -- so few that they could be at risk for getting those diseases, in spite of the vaccinations.

"When the PFC concentration increases in the body, the immune system gets more sluggish and is less capable of maintaining a defense mechanism against microorganisms," the study's lead researcher, Dr. Philippe Grandjean of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, told Reuters.

PFCs cause reproductive and developmental problems in laboratory animals, the EPA says, but have not officially been found to be toxic to humans. Small amounts of PFCs can be found in everything from food containers and microwave popcorn bags to paints, pesticides, and flame-retardant clothing; Stainmaster, Teflon, and Scotchguard are some well-known brands containing PFCs. But much larger amounts of PFCs are produced when non-stick and stain-repellent products are manufactured and they often end up contaminating the ground and water supplies.

PFCs don't biodegrade, and have been building up in the environment since at least the 1950s. Fish caught in contaminated waters have high levels of pollutants including PFCs; according to the EPA, consumption of contaminated food and drinking water are probably the main ways we're exposed to the chemicals.

"I don't feel comfortable with the compounds for myself and my family and would rather eliminate them," Grandjean told Reuters.

Grandjean and his team took blood samples from 587 pregnant women in the Faroe Islands, near Iceland and Scotland, and tested them for five common PFCs. They repeated the test using blood samples from  the children when the kids were 5 years old, after they'd received their diphtheria and tetanus vaccinations, and again after a booster shot at age 7.

"A doubling of PFOS in the mother's blood resulted in a 39 percent decrease in diphtheria antibody in the child at age five. A doubled PFOA concentration in the child's blood at age 5 meant a decrease in antibodies at age seven of 36 percent and 25 percent to tetanus and diphtheria respectively," The Atlantic reported.

(Why women from a remote island in Northern Europe? Because they eat a fish-based diet, and fish and seafood are more likely to have high levels of PFCs.)

If kids aren't responding to vaccines the way they're supposed to, then the study's findings may point to an even bigger issue, Grandjean says: The possibility of an infectious disease epidemic. Antibodies created  in response to a vaccine can indicate how well a person's immune system response in general, so if PFCs have an effect on the way kids' react to Diphtheria and Tetanus, it could also mean that they're having problems creating antibodies for other diseases.

Marie Francis, a spokesperson for the American Chemistry Council, a trade association representing chemical manufacturers, said in a statement that the chemical industry is "carefully reviewing" the new study.

"It is important for consumers to know that our companies, working with the EPA, have made marked progress towards advancing new chemistries that are substitutes for the older chemicals evaluated in this  study," Francis said. "These new fluoro chemistries have an improved environmental and toxicological profile while continuing to offer consumer benefits."

It's difficult to avoid PFCs entirely, because they're in so many things, including the containers many processed foods come in and the building materials our houses are made out of. The U.S. government doesn't require that companies say whether a product contains the chemicals, Grandjean points out, and China, which supplies many of the goods sold in the U.S., doesn't restrict PFC use at all.

Always use cast iron or stainless steel. Also, dump the plastic and sillicon utensils. Use wood or stainless - cast iron wont scratch :) Another tidbit, replace all of your plastic bowls and food storage containers with glass. Not only does glass last longer, is better for your health and is cheaper in the long run, it's also SO much easier to clean :)

Yes plastics leach into our food and mimic the effects of estrogen on the endocrine system and are called xenoestrogen. They are thought to be the reason for the high rate of cancers like breast cancer and other hormone related cancers in younger and younger people and other hormone related diseases and dysfunctions such as lower sperm count, smaller genitals in males and the increase of hermaphrodites in humans as well frogs and fish in the lakes were such pollutants are found.

There is no evidence that silicon is in any way unsafe for cooking purposes, on the contrary, it's a very safe material to use for cooking.

Devon ... do you know what is used to make silicon utensils? They are chemicals. Saran wrap, plastic containers, etc ... not good for anyone.

We're all so F***ing screwd, doesn't matter what you eat, drink or breathe there's toxic crap in all of it. My family stopped eating canned tuna (any tuna really) because my wife had mercury poisoning from eating it. Anything from the ocean is essentially slow acting poison... Our water is poisoned the air is poison but the worst is that im not too worried about my generation, what about my 6 week old daughter? or her children's generation? What have we done???

Yeah and some are still in denial. What can we do? Only what we can. We can't change the world all at once - and it did not happen overnight - but we can change what we do and where we put our money and raise our kids the best we can and try to set an example for others and contribute to some form of charity or organization that is doing something or join a group and the heck with the rest. What will be will be.

Hey Dean... the hippies were bitching about this in the 60's and it became a lot better. Now all the younger people care about is money. Your generation needs to hit the streets and start fighting for your rights .

Some people have been saying this for years! I refuse to use non-stick and I get laughed at. Perhaps now people will take me a bit more seriously.
      • Sam 3 months ago
I certainly hope so.. been saying the same thing for years too.

Yes, my whole family laughs at me for this and re-cycling, composting, and more.

"He who laughs last, laughs best" the saying goes and you will probably out live them but it really does not matter if they laugh or not just be true to your beliefs and the heck with the morons. You have nothing to prove. It is their loss.

Government and the big drug companies DO NOT and WILL NOT ever profit from healthy people. While healthy people can work and do things is common sense, it isn't to the big money pigs. Our foods are full of chemicals, steroids, preservatives and it affects all of us.

I thing we should be told who funds all these "surveys". I saw the other day that there are more people doing research into cancer than those who have the disease. Is there ever any accounting for all these fun raisers? I'm getting up in years and am always in awe that I have lived this long with all the things that are bad for me!
      • voice of reason 3 months ago
yeah well it will sadly not be the same for the younger generation nor for the other life forms on earth now and those being conceived! There is more and more contamination. There was also much less pollution during your gestation period and your parents, whose genes you inherited, were not exposed to any toxic chemicals back then. Unfortunately, your genes have probably lot of mutations that you transferred onto your children who have also have been exposed to a lot more than you ever were and as your cells do not reproduce as fast as those of a younger person you and your generation are not so much at risk.

Cancer research is the biggest money scam going, along with heart and stroke. Why is it, that after 30+ years, there is nothing close to preventing these diseases? Why is it that we are expected to fork out more money yet no accountability as to where our money went. Why are there no results or answers?
      • Redletter 3 months ago
There is no money in prevention...most petro related and chlorine related industries would have to close...not necessarily a bad thing.

stainless steel and cast iron is what we use.there are so many pollutans in the air these days is is dangerous to even breathe.

i just switched back to stainless steel, mom always said not to trust new technology, but she's the one who's been buying no- stick after no-stick every time they wear out. A blind old aunt scraped one clean and died of cancerous bowel obstruction the same year
    • Wandering Soul  •  3 months ago
Yikes! Is this accurate? My pots and pan are non-stick...should I go out and buy a new set?!?!
I still have one stainless steel pot, that I don't often use, as it is small, mostly I cook with the non-stick....now I'm worried!!

When the company that created non-stick coating (Dupont) refused to disclose the chemical make up of there coating for further analysis what happened? Nothing. People simply trust or prefer to think large corporations will act in the public's best interest. Think again. Just 2 years ago most plastic products has BPA. Now they are removing it from some plastics that are used for food and liquid products. As old saying goes buyer beware.

Does anybody remember the group class action lawsuit filed against Dupont about ten years ago? It seems that cows living on farms downstream of Dupont's factory where Dupont manufactured their Teflon frying pans were experiencing incredibly high levels of birth defects in their calves. The farmers won the suit but then they were severely ripped off by Dupont on the appeal. When I read this story I threw out my non-stick frying pans and bought a couple of good old fashioned iron pans.

It seems like any thing we eat, breath or touch is bad for us and we will get some for of cancer. I do not know every chemical that is in my food and If I did I probably wouldn't eat. I would love to be able to plant my own veggies and fruit in my backyard and have me and the kids live off that. I haven't the slightest idea on how to plant anything.

BJ Said "What I can't figure out is why the governments don't require long term testing of chemicals to determine how they accumulate in the environment and how they affect animals and people." ------- That is so Liberal of you to even suggest that. How dare you. This can potetially put people out of work and raise the prices of our pots, pans, microwave popcorn and food containers. If it is profitable to do this, then I agree, however it is not and that's whats important.

WE ALL KNOW THAT TEFLON IS BAD!!!! But why the Governments do nothing about it?? Shouldn't it be illegal to produce, sell and use????

how about the headline on the right panel about how "McDonald's ditches use of 'pink slime' in U.S. meat, chef Jamie Oliver celebrates". Can you imagine if Mcdonald's cooked their burgers on teflon coated grill or god forbid on a plastic tray in a microwave oven.
