Ottawa mother to live stream birth over internet

CBCAn Ottawa mother and professional birth coach is preparing to live stream the birth of her third child online.

Nancy Salgueiro, a 32-year-old mother of two, plans to set up a high-definition video camera in the living room of her south Ottawa home and hook it up to her laptop.

Salgueiro said the main goal is to promote natural home birth.

"I feel it's really important for people to see the difference because birth is not what you see on TV. It can be, but it doesn't have to be like that," she said.

Salgueiro said the event can be seen on her website close to her expecting date of Oct. 7. People can pre-register and 800 have already signed up.

Both of her children – Leilani, four, and Taivus, two – were born at home. Their arrivals were also captured on video but not streamed online.

The plan is for Taivus to cut the umbilical cord.

Salgueiro, who is also a professional chiropractor, will sit in a pool during the birth because it helps the process. She believes it is much better than rushing to hospital.

"A woman's water breaks and they go, 'Oh my goodness,' and they rush off to the hospital and speed all the way there," she said.

"Then somebody's legs are behind their ears as a parade of people come in and that is not at all what a home birth is like."

Her husband has been a little hesitant about the idea, but he will be in the room to help his wife and provide support.

"I'm just trying to support her in her passion," said Mike Carreira, "This is a stretch for me, but I'm going to do it."

Salgueiro did admit she would have to go to a hospital if there are any complications. But the Barrhaven mother is relying on her past success at home to help avoid that scenario.

She will also have two midwives to help her, as well as one person to operate the camera.

"It was just a thought that came into my head," said Salgueiro, "I was like, 'I could have this birth live online,' I didn't know anyone had done it before."

People have signed up to watch from Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

Maybe some of the people on here are under the wrong impression so let me clear it up.

Nobody is forcing you to watch it. In fact you are extremely unlikely to watch it accidentally I might add...

We are living in civilized society and have some values.
Show birth like you are living in forest or african Jungle.
It should be cover up because this is private occasion.

Good luck, personally I was more than happy to have a baby in a hospital.

its better to have it at the hospital. complications might arize. Privacy is also important. Thats the way we are made. we are not animals who can just give birth anyhow

Complications MAY arise, but they are rare and a plan is in place in the case that they do. Privacy is a personal issue and this woman is passionate about sharing this part of her life with others. I think its amazing!

The woman is grandstanding for her "15 minutes of fame" just like so many other idiots and live tv. It's hard to take someone serious about their passion when it is overboard extreme and putting this show on publicly, against her husband's concerns - he is "supporting HER passion", clearly shows she has an agenda.

The only 'agenda' is for her to help show people who are interested about birth how calm and natural it can be. She is trying to improve maternal health care in the end of all of this - something every woman and man should care about.

she is just plain stupid !!!!!!.....my wife had to go for an emergency c-section .....if we were at home trying this than my wife and the baby would be dead !!!!!

If she gets the all clear from her doctor, then what is the problem?

I find it very amusing that so many people are making comments about birth being such a private occasion but at the same time are saying that it needs to occur in a hospital. I've given birth in a hospital before and it was by far the most public display I have ever endured. People who I've never seen before were privy to my most personal information, not to mention the parade that came and went during the actual delivery. Even when I specifically asked that no other staff be permitted my husband still had to chase out someone from housekeeping while my son's head was crowning. Private? In a hospital? Hahahahaha!!!

Good for her. She is lucky she had no complications with her first two. Saying she will go to hospital if there are complications is useless. Sometimes the complications aren't apparent until the actual moment of delivery. Two of my daughter-in-laws gave birth after natural labours with no signs of distress to babies who were flat-line. Thank god these labours were on the birthing ward of the hospital and the neo-natal unit was just down the hall or we would have lost our two beautiful grandsons.

I have no problem with her streaming the live birth but I feel anyone having a baby at home is NUTS!!!! Both my babies were born in the hospital and thank God that we were there with all the right technology to save my second baby who was born with a heart problem. If I had not been in the hospital he would have died.

Statistics show less complications occur at a home birth than hospital births. Sometimes the hospital is what brings on the complications. But, I am not saying the hospital doesn't have value. :)

Women in the past have always had home births most of the time with their mother and sisters to help them I have had two home births and would never consider having a baby in te hospital I'm having a baby I'm not sick.

Hey Melo, how does the hospital cause congenital heart disease exactly? What complications does the hospital bring on?

If the only hospital birth she's seen is on TV, it's small wonders she thinks the rest of us run there the second our water breaks and sit there with our legs spread open while 15 doctors, a husband, a boyfriend, a priest and my friend's pet dog watch the action under bright lights. Take it from someone who has given birth in an *actual* hospital (not necessarily by choice...it's called "life") that midwives support labour (at least in my area), women can refuse checks, AROM, epidurals--the more informed she is, the better (obviously)--and we don't all line up like sheep and just expect others to make our births happen. I am happy *for her* that her pregnancies and births have remained uncomplicated: not all of us have that *luxury* in life...so take it as that, luxury, because it certainly (at least from this article) doesn't boil down to knowledge. Perhaps she and others along this line make me feel like my last c-section after a VBAC was a failure...despite my being listened to, despite my making the best of a bad situation....if only they could see how hard *some* of us try. I guess I pray she *doesn't* have complications because that live on the internet would be even more awful than what I went through.

Just had my 2nd homebirth, first water birth this summer. It was a wonderful birth! I've also given birth in a hospital with an epidural. Homebirth is soooo much better. Water REALLY helps with pain.

Having a home birth is awesome, Having a 2 year old cut the cord or seeing it is CRAZY..Way to give the kids nightmares... And the award for the Mom who is seeking attention goes to ...

I get her point, low stress, COULD mean low stress delivery. I pray it goes well for her, and no complications arise.

Guess what, she say's a birth is nothing like you see on tv, well guess what some of those women were idiots like you and your husband and made a buck. No body wants to see your vagina pushing out a baby, has been done since the beginning of time naturally without a camera person. Money Money ???????????????????????

@MJ. Might have been worse..... Could have said "live STEAM birth"........
