Looking for love? Don't admit to liking this band, survey says

Membership in Nickelback's extensive international fan club may cost you more than $1.29 per song at iTunes. A cheeky poll by a UK dating site (via jezebel.com) suggests that it may also cost singletons their chance at true love, or at the very least a second date with a musically literate hottie. And that, to quote Nickelback's lead singer/international facial hair model Chad Kroeger, would be Too Bad

According to the survey by Tastebuds.fm, a UK dating site that matches single people up based on their musical preferences, professing affection for the band that sings Never Gonna Be Alone is not a smart move romantically. When Tastebuds.fm asked their subscribers to list their biggest musical turnoffs, more than 1,600 music fans clapped their hands and said Nickelback.

Alex Parish, co-founder of the site and a musician himself, explained the reasoning behind the survey.

Said Parish: "We were curious to know which bands people would be most horrified to discover when browsing their date's iPod."

In Parish's view, therefore, finding Hero on someone's iPod is akin to finding a Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger in their medicine cabinet. After watching the video (on mute) for their summertime hit, Rockstar it's hard not to see his point.

What other musicians and bands did the poll reveal are likely to make a potential amour shake, rattle and roll right out the door on the first date? In order of their horror-inducing power: Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Coldplay, U2, Creed, Katy Perry, Lil Wayne and Britney Spears.

That's just the unisex playlist from hell, however. The site also revealed how men and women react differently to terrible terrible music. For example, men appeared to object to such bands as Oasis, Mumford & Sons and Kings of Leon. Women, on the other hand, appeared more sensitive to the aural violations committed by the sexy ladies of pop music, finding Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj objectionable.

What's the takeaway for singletons looking for love? Music connoisseurs are a jerky judgmental demographic who take an adolescent preoccupation with being cool well into adulthood, unfortunately. So don't take rejection from a grown man wearing a concert T-shirt personally because as that obnoxious twit Katy Perry says, Baby, you're a firework.

A firework with terrible taste in music perhaps, but a firework all the same.

O.K, I admit I'm not a fan, but Nickleback, seriously? I can think of way worse bands that would turn me off dating a person more than Nickleback. For example, I would not date a guy who listens to old Barney sing along tapes. One must draw the line somewhere. lol. Sharing similar tastes in music can be important in a relationship if you are both super into music, but so what if your date has certain other preferences, it doesn't mean that all her/ his music will conflict with yours. This is stupid. In other words, just another typical Yahoo! article.

I think what is stupid here is you actually compared Barney (childrens entertainment) to actual musicians.

        Just another typical Yahoo! user.

I agree with Phil. But Barney has a sing along? Where can I get that? Duz iTunes have it? I love that song he sings, I love u, u love me, It's better than baby, baby, woooooo.....

        @ Phil and Stavro

I believe her comparison of Barney to Nickelback was to show how ridiculous the article really is. The fact that neither one of you got that, shows how simple both of you are.

As an older man, I have to say the younger generation is just plain stupid at times. If you are basing your relationship on music, you are setting yourself up for failure. Music tastes CHANGE WITH TIME. Everyone has one or 2 crappy songs/bands on their iPods WHEN THEY WERE A HIT. Times change and now "they suck". Think of all the "hot music" from last year and compare it's Cool" factor to today's playlist. Looks pretty lame after 5 years.

I'm not saying musical tastes shouldn't be considered while dating; ( I would blow my brains out if I have to hear Enya, or Kenny G every hour of the day). Music tastes should rank low when compared with Personal Values, Honesty, How they treat you, Ambitions for the Future, and things like that. You know? The Old Fashion stuff no one seems to care about these days.

Dataing sites crack me up. Girl puts, "he has to like music"... who doesn't like music! That is such a dumb thing to put on a dating profile!

Dude...if I ended things over each girl I've dated who liked crappy music I would never date anyone. It's a rarity to find many people who know of, let alone like, most good bands...in a musical climate where most people listen to a bunch of guys slamming out repeated power chords, or look at you like you're crazy if like any band that knows how to play an augmented or diminished chord...OR (even worse) electronically-tinged pop fare like Katy Perry and Justin Bieber, people who can barely even play their instruments let alone play them well, there's little hope of finding many people who are musically compatible if you listen to truly interesting and original music. The simple truth is, rhythms a basic amoeba could keep time to and melodies a mentally handicapped squirrel could come up with are in vogue right now. We live in an age where simplicity is cool, where bands like Nickelback and Bieber sell as many records as Led Zeppelin, Cream, Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix once did. It's sad, but true...there's still good music out there, but it's not something you hear often on the radio any longer, you have to look at the underground scene to find people who are really pushing themselves musically any longer because in most cases if it's not in 4/4 time and filled with fifth chords it's not catchy enough to be heard on the radio.

        Amen.

I'm lucky. My girlfriend shares my taste in music and we both like stuff that's off the beaten track.

Charos your the only reason I keep scrolling down this page well put again, music like most other things is a packaged product that were told we are gonna like before we hear it.

I agree with most of what you said. The record companies and radio waves are looking for a safe bet: follow a formula. And yes, at the moment that formula has a lot of "4 on the floor" simplicity. But you know what? This has always existed. My guess is that you're a guitar player in your early 20's so you lack the experience to see that the pattern has always been there. Most likely some of the bands that you like from the 70's were doing EXACTLY the same thing. And in 1975 there was someone like you out there saying it was crap. On finding a romantic partner with different tastes in music, I say GREAT. As a musician, I've never been with anyone who had the exact interest as me, but what I have found is that my mind was opened up by people with a different flavor.

I listen to Britney Spears, Mumford and Sons, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Creed, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift (listening to her as I type this) and Rihanna. If some picky bitch doesn't want to giove me a second date because of it I am better of without that type of person.
      • MAURICE 6 months ago
easy for you to say mr smartypants. but what about us heterosexual guys :(
      • MCRAE 6 months ago
Calling me gay because I like particular music is worldly of you. I also listen to NIN, ACDC, Nirvana, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Soundgarden, Ironmaiden etc etc. Unlike most people I am comfortable experiencing all music. I won't allow my decisions to be defined by what others think.

Somehow I knew this would be about Nickleback before clicking the link LOL
    • coolmints  •  6 months ago
Once the band becomes mainstream they lose all the credit, doesn't matter if they're still good. Is it fair, no!
It's silly to hate pop music. It's not for everyone, but it works great as workout, dance music for a lot of people, whether they admit to it or not.
    • 777  •  6 months ago
It's getting really stupid that Nickelback thing. Is it the new trend in Hollywood to hate Nickelback? You're "in" if you hate it?!!! Morons...
    • Magpie  •  6 months ago
Quite frankly, if ANYTHING on my ipod is going to cause you to reject me, you're the kind of shallow, self-absorbed loser that I don't want anything to do with anyway.
    • Ellie  •  6 months ago
Seriously? You wouldn't go out with someone just because they like a certain band/artist? Holy crap. Just because they listen to a certain artist doesn't mean you have to listen to that artist as well. It's not like your boyfriend/girlfriend is going to tie you to a chair and force you to listen and sing along.

Im a huge fan of Nickleback......if they are such a bad band then why do their concerts sell out?...............hmmmmm why are they millionaires?....just saying ;)
    • GARY  •  6 months ago
Being Canadian I must stand behind Canadian talent. I do like a few songs. Photograph rocks. But I do find they all sell sort of the same. But theyare not that bad. My God I have heard much worse out there

if your horrified to find ANY band on someones ipod, you need serious mental help.
    • Bobbi  •  6 months ago
if i dont get a second date because i like those bands well then that is just pathetic and you dont deserve a second date anyway......you wouldnt be worth my time

WTH is everyone's problem with Nickelback???!!
    • Glen  •  6 months ago
It's always amazed me how one of the most apparently hated acts on the planet is also one of the most successful/profitable . . . how does that even work?
    • O3  •  6 months ago
I'm going to listen to Nickelback on my way home from work today. Just because I can!
    • Leroy O. Jackson  •  6 months ago
