Is Minnie Mouse 'Hot'? Disney Sells a T-shirt that Says So

A new Disney t-shirt describes Minnie Mouse as A new Disney t-shirt describes Minnie Mouse as

There have been many sexist t-shirts for girls recently recently declaring things like "I'm too pretty to do my homework so my brother has to do it for me," "I'm too pretty to do math," "Future Trophy Wife" written on them. The Jane Dough points out that Disney is responsible for the latest t-shirt fail, with a new line that uses adjectives to describe their famous characters.

As you can see, the words make up the silhouette of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. Check out the new tees here. Some of the words are tricky to read, so we're writing them out for you below.

    • Mickey's descriptors: Clever, Awesome, The Boss, Mischievous, Genuine, Curious, Original, Leader, Funny, and Brave
    • Donald's descriptors: Angry, Fabulous, Quack, Duck, Temper-tantrum, Funny, and Feisty.
    • Goofy's descriptors: Goof, Fun, Comic, Weird, Genuine, Laugh Out Loud, Clumsy, Tall, Smart , Wacky, Silly, and Funny
    • Minnie's descriptors: Cute, Sweet, Gorgeous, Adventurous, Genuine, Adorable, Beautiful, Lovable, Fun, Pretty, and Hot (written in big letters on her foot)

We understand these are playful kids tees, but do you see the problem here? The male characters are all distinguished by their personalities and behaviors. Clever, mischievous, feisty, wacky, funny. The majority of the words used to describe Minnie Mouse are all about her appearance. Gorgeous, adorable, beautiful, pretty, and hot all essentially are the same thing. Is there nothing else worth noting about the female Disney character? Also, is Minnie Mouse "Hot"? And do little kids know what "Hot" means when describing a female cartoon mouse? Sorry Disney. Your new Minnie Mouse tee is not cute, adorable, or lovable. Just like your unrealistic portrayal of girls becoming princesses and living happily ever after, we think this shirt stinks.

The point is, we have a generation of young girls who worry about being "hot" and sexy at far too young of an age. Look at little girls halloween costumes, Bratz dolls, even Strawberry Shortcake has been changed to look somewhat sexier. If the shirt had said "cute" and left the other words to describe her personality, fine, but the fact that it went on and on about appearance does send a message that looking pretty and hot is more important than anything else.

It seems like a small thing but you don't realise what effect this has on people, especially children. People don't realised they are being influenced. Things like this do make a difference. Funny, smart, creative - what about these?
    • TMH  •  Kelowna, British Columbia  •  1 month 10 days ago
they could have tossed a few words like smart thoughtful or anything in regards to her intellect really, we need to start teaching our girls its not just how you look cause looks wont last forever

And why is the one of the only descriptors of her personality('lovable') based on an outward locus of perception?
    • Greg  •  Toronto, Ontario  •  1 month 9 days ago
Nothing says "I don't like it" quite like "I won't buy it". Disney will change the shirt when it doesn't sell. And if it sells, then I guess this "news" article was really an opinion piece, right Yahoo???

i know it seems stupid but the writer has a point...kid's view of the world is shaped in childhood and for the most part boys can do anything they want and girls can too but they better look good doing it (right Barbie?) - Minnie is the worst character Disney has and is completely sexist

I did notice that a good portion of Minnie's words can be considered physical descriptions. With the boys, not so much.

Since I grew out of watching Disney on Sunday evenings, I've come to realize how insidious the whole operation is. There's no Disney movie (or very few) where the mother isn't dead or missing, leaving her offspring to the foibles and inadequacies of their father. The female offspring are often targetted for death. The female movie characters have huge boobs that are barely contained in flimsy garmets. The only role models Disney provides for female children are negative ones. Unfortunately, dressing up like a princess is fun and garners lots of attention.

Obviousily there are no fat, stupid, ugly reality characters at Disney.

I'm sure a lot of people thin this is nothing .....but as a female and a lover of Disney this is so sexist... like really they didn't ever try t hide it? I'm disappointed in disney... who's children do they really want to wear those shirts?
    • JANE  •  Toronto, Ontario  •  1 month 10 days ago
Its called marketing....Disney obviously saw the attention the previous mentioned shirts got and followed suit.

at least its on her foot and not her body

Uh...I really don’t get the feeling they thought so much about what and where to use the words. That T-shirt is just like any other random one in dollarama.

These shirts are in fact meant to describe the cartoon, not the child wearing the shirt but yes, I do see the male vs female difference in description. Girls are not allowed to have ATTITUDE or show REJECTION it seems. Just go on to be pretty, perfect, HOT.. I resent that word there, "HOT". Especially to be worn by a child. I have a daughter who had several items of clothing given to her. Some were brand new but had flirty descriptive words on them. They went right back out of the house in a bag. If it said "feisty, sporty, spirited, brave, tough, strong, bold" then yes, I'd have let her wear them. All over magazines, media etc it's teaching girls to stand to be sexy or beautiful. I think it's great to look nice and feel great by how you look but not to relate that to sexuality. Especially for children who are not even sexual! Even the pageants I'm right against. My older sister was in a pageant then I was actually FORCED to go into one. It was the most humilliating and degrading venture of my lifetime. I literally got into the back room with the judges before bein sent on stage then told them I was FORCED into this pageant. That being after the judge asked me, "Why do you want to be Miss M".. I said flat out- I DON'T!! I was the sort of girl that while I had lipstick put on me, I'd wash it right off. I suppose part of that nature may have had something to do with being raised around a street of perverts. I think expressing HOT & SEXY to a young girl is introducing her to perversion. Almost like a mental rape

Kids don't care about this stuff, and Minnie is hot in Micky's eyes :)
Honestly, I get where the whole feminist vibe is coming from. There seem to be more adjectives describing her appearance than her qualities - but there are still a few that describe her qualities, and Minnie is not a very popular character, so those were probably a stretch as it is. Minnie is just Micky's sidekick.

It's sexist, but hey, it's Disney.
