Is Diet Soda Making You Fat?

Is diet soda making you fat?

By SHAPE Diet Doctor Mike Roussell, PhD

Once and for all, we wanted to know: Can diet soda make you fat? So we went to the SHAPE diet doctor, Mike Roussell, PhD, to get his opinion. Here's what he had to say:

In a word: no. While drinking diet soda every day isn't exactly good for your health, the chances of it sabotaging your weight-loss efforts are slim. The common misconception regarding the role of diet soda and weight gain comes from a couple of studies that received a lot of media attention. One such study looked at more 6,500 participants and found that diet soda drinkers were 67 percent more like to have diabetes and 37 percent more likely to have metabolic syndrome (a combo of symptoms that is basically where pre-diabetes meets heart disease). What's more, data from the Framingham Heart Study, the longest running heart disease study in the US, found a 56-percent increase in metabolic syndrome when people drank one or more diet sodas per day!

Another study published in 2008 also found an association between diet soda consumption and metabolic syndrome. The interesting thing about this particular study was that drinking diet soda was linked to a higher risk for developing metabolic syndrome than drinking sugar-sweetened beverages. Drinking diet soda was essentially as bad for your health as eating fried food. I'm sure you'd agree that having a diet coke is much different than having a regular coke or a basket of curly fries.

How can we make sense of all this research?

There are two primary schools of thought: The first is that diet soda alone does not cause weight gain, but it has more to do with the unhealthy habits of diet soda drinkers-the sum of which leads to weight gain. That could be the case. The second school of thought is that the artificial sweeteners in diet soda mess with your body's chemical processing, causing you to eat more and consequently gain weight. The research in this area is inconsistent at best.

The stance I take with my clients trying to lose weight: If diet soda is going to be your one vice, that's fine. I'd rather have you drink that than a high-calorie beverage, but limit your consumption to one per day at most. If you're doing everything else with your diet and exercise correctly, you will lose weight. Having the occasional diet soda won't stop you from achieving your goals or the body you've always wanted.

It begs the question...."What came first..diabetes or drinking diet cola?" I am diabetic and cannot drink regular soda...too much sugar. So I turned to diet soda so I could drink something besides water! In there study I would show a high co-relation between diet soda and diabetes....so then, my question!

Its not the diet soda that makes you fat. Its the double bacon cheeseburger that you order with it.

Exactly what I was going to say. It always makes me laugh when I see a severely obese person order a mega calorie, artery clogging meal and then ask for a diet coke to chase it down. As if the 1 calorie drink is going to make up for all the other crap.

I see a lot of fat people drink diet soda to wash down their chilli dogs, and hamburgers.

diet soda had nothing to do with them being fat, not a great study. Kids in school could perform better science.

If you want to curb your appetite before a meal, eat a little sweet first.

no, soda is making you fat, its like vegan burgers, why would someone who wants to eat vegetables as a 'better' choice in their live want to eat something that looks like a burger, same with soda, if you are drinking diet soda because you want to lose weight, you are doing it wrong

Nobody would drink or eat "diet" if they knew what artificial sweetners are actually doing to them. (Google "sweet deception" folks) Couple pounds weight gain is better than sucking in that poison.

if you are serious into proper healthy eating and exercise chances are you are smart enough not to drink any kind of soda including sport drinks I too get bored of water so once and a while I will put a fresh cut up lemon in it gives it a nice flavor Happy new year all

See the movie "Tapped" if you think Bottled water is remotely healthy - it isn't. The problem is that Soda I suspect is largely purchased for the fizzyness and the fact that it tastes good. Diet soda is to combat the very hard carbohydrates/sugar in regular soft drinks. People get "close to" the same taste with zero carbs. The chemicals - especially aspartame is troubling. When 50 rats are given rat sized amounts of aspartame and all 50 die of brain hemorrhages then something is wrong. I looked this up in fact because for awhile I was drinking a LOY of diet pop - 3-4 cans per day. (I know). But I would feel a shock in the left side of my head as if I was hit by electricity. When I then saw the article on the rats - I cut out the diet pop - and all pop - and drank coffee and V-8 (low sodium) instead. V-8 is quite low in carbs and sugar - not zero but much better than any regular fruit juice or pop.

Still I do like rootbeer so I will have one now and again. The problem though is the alternatives - Water people don't like the taste of it - so they buy bottled water - again this is far worse for you than tap water (provided you don't live in places where the water is not cared for very well). Living in China - the water is undrinkable - it will kill you - you are forced to buy bottled water - which isn't good - it will kill you slower.

Coffee is high in anti-oxidents and since it is from a bean and the water is boiling to make it it is very likely to be a safe drink - along with tea.

I am happy to have found a juice maker in Hong Kong that sells 100% juice - the ingredients are water and Kiwi - and that's it. It doesn't always taste the same from bottle to bottle and the shelf life is very short - you can't buy 20 at a time because in three days it's bad. I find this is probably better than Minute Maid that has oranges in vats for many years and add flavour chemicals to make it taste like orange juice. And they label it "freshly squeezed - yes 4 years ago!

Stress is 5 times more likely to kill you than smoking and being overweight COMBINED - so people should be fighting for 3 day workweeks and nicer bosses and better partners. Then they would not be reaching for the chocolate bars and slurpees to get a dopamine hit to make them feel a little bit happy. Sweet food combats quasi-depression. Been there. Still battle it. Still like a Dr. Pepper or A&W every now and again. But it's better than Beer.

Artificial sweeteners (Excitotoxins); AKA, aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, neotame, saccharin, will at the very least, slowly kill off your braincells. If you can't understand this, you've probably already lost too many! On the other hand, the products sweetened with HFCS, will eventually shut down the pancreas's ability to produce insulin and you'll end up with Type 2 Diabetes in no time at all! But hey; don't listen to me. Believe the greedy and criminal corporations who tell you that toxic GMOs and chemicals are good for your body...and make sure you run right out and get that vaccine, filled with MSG, formaldehyde, polysorbate 80, thimerasol (mercury) and squalene (known to cause cancer). Good luck with your total lack of knowledge.

This doctor is being politically correct; he's full of nonsense. Everyone knows that diet drinks are simply BAD for you because they contain FAKE SUGAR and your body doesn't know what to do with that. It messes up your metabolism. Most people I know that drink this stuff are overweight, no doubt, because they don't want to do the real work but want to take the easy way out.

There are so many health issues related to aspartame its a wonder that its even allowed in our food chain. If you are a user of this poison do yourself a favor and check out harmful effects of aspartame

Every poor choice such as diet soda is a grain of sand on the sickness side of the scale. If you can rationalize that choice, which others are you rationalizing as well. As the Zen Bhuddists put it: "How you do anything is how you do everything". Choose health and smile.

What I wanted to know is if diet soda spikes insulin levels just as sugar, other studies do suggest it, so therefore it would hinder your dieting intentions. When insulin is spiked fat is easier to gain, then again so is muscle, so it all depends on your goals I guess. Lets just hope it isnt killing people
