Is African mango a weight-loss wonder fruit?

(AP Photo/Mahesh Kumar A./The Canadian Press)Goodbye, grapefruit diet. Hello, African mango?

Everyone’s looking for the magical weight-loss solution. Some claim they’ve found it in the African mango, the latest fruit fad to invade the weight-loss world. Its supplements have even been endorsed on The Dr. Oz show.

Dr. Tanya Edwards wrote on DoctorOz.com:

“Sounds like a magic bullet to me! I tried it myself, and lo and behold, in the first month of taking it (only once per day, mind you, instead of the recommended twice daily), I lost seven pounds without making any changes in my usual healthy diet and exercise routine!”

Africa’s “bush mango” boasts a special agent called IGOB131, a fat eliminator. Die-hard fans claim the fruit’s seeds contain a “’special fibre’ that binds to cholesterol and helps to eliminate unwanted fats from the body — thereby resulting in rapid weight loss.”

Some studies are backing up the weight-loss claims — and citing improved cholesterol and blood-sugar levels — but the researchers had “a vested interest in making the product,” making the results tough to take seriously.

    Critics are rolling their eyes.

Fox News’ “medicine hunter” Chris Kilham points out fruit fibre and reduced cholesterol is a connection we’ve known about for ages. He would sooner recommend we enjoy healthy diets filled with a variety of vegetables and fruits — biting into succulent mangoes rather than popping extract supplements — than encourage us to give into the quick-fix promises of what he calls a “scam.”

Edwards, in a follow up to her “magic bullet” enthusiasm, conceded:

“The results have been slightly underwhelming. A few patients lost a few pounds, but it has not been the magic bullet I had hoped for. And with continued use, I have not lost any more weight.”

Fortunately, studies have shown no undesirable side effects.

Fibre is great for you. Instead of spending your hard-earned cash on supplements, head to your local fruit stand and buy a real mango or two.

I heard that they were replacing the apple pieces with mango, but thickening the caramel dip with more corn sweeteners!

seriously? pick your a** up and do something! stop watching these lame shows whose real agenda is advertising and profit. if you have heard of a sugar called FRUCTOSE, you might wanna re-evaluate your grocery list as these forbidden sugar is pretty much on any fruit. and if that didn't wake you up, here's another newsflash.. if there is a miracle food, drink or pill that exists.. then there are no obese people in the whole world and companies will stop producing these things because IT ACTUALLY WORKS! im sorry to break your hearts by smacking you the TRUTH in your face.. you need to realize that there are 3 things needed to be balanced in our body which are: carbohydrates, proteins and fats. and there are 3 things to consider to have the best body everyone needs or wants: exercise, diet and supplements. this is one of the examples of "it takes three to tango" and not two! im not a pro or something, but im not a fool either to fall easily with those things. it's just me saying to all of you that "it's not what they are telling you, it's what they're not!"

They are just trying to hike up the price and demand for mangos to improve the african economy. Good strategy. I use to buy avacados in large quantities all the time. They wrote an article extoling the benefits of avacado and now its too expensive to afford.

There is no big deal in losing weight.
      1. Know how many calories and meals are to keep your weight steady. can be done with trials.
      2. Start cutting off some calories/ meals until you see that weight starts falling.
      3. Make a schedule and do it every day.
      4. I can suggest the following daily menu from Monday to Friday to have weight going down and with some small break on weekends.
5 fresh fruit and vegetables: Like apple, tomato, few dates, few green leaves, orange.
1 piece of rye break or 1 tortilla of lower calorie content, 1/2 cheese pieces and 1 piece of lean turkey or chicken 1-2 mm and a cap of tea with no more than 1-2 sugar spoons. That will be a day.
The weight will be coming steady down until all you want to lose is lost and then it can be adjusted to keep weight stable.

Wait a minute, it is not that easy to lose weight as you say Shiko2000. I have been trying since I was a small child. I am now 47. I was born with a rare metabolic condition where the body does not allow for weight loss. I am not extremely overweight, but I should lose about 50 lbs. I have been monitored by specialists forever and so far they have no explanations. I excercise and eat very well. Lots of fruits and vegetables and monitor my bread and fat intake. So before you say there is no big deal stop and think about all the people out there who do suffer from these troubling metabolic conditions. There are, of course some people who do just eat the wrong foods and then complain they can't lose, but there are far more with medical conditions.

African mangoes are better than other mangoes? I suspect the African mangoes help you lose weight more than others because of all the unregulated chemicals used there. You lose weight because you are being poisoned. You die sooner but thinner.

If African mango is good for losing weight, so be it. I am a fruit lover even as a kid. I eat fruits in season specially mango. So far, Philippine mango is the best I have tasted. Honestly, Philippine fruits like papaya, pomelo, coconut, pineapple, etc. taste better in comparison for me. Maybe because Philippines is a tropical country with much different soil components that make the fruits taste sweeter. Whatever fruit is in season, eat it. It does'nt matter where it originates. The fact that such fruit comes at a certain time means it is created that way for eating. Don't you think so?

How would I know if it is an African mango?? We have about 10 different kind of mangoes, from India, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia.

Is there a stamp on the mango that says "AFRICA" ?

And does the weight loss Only apply to African mangoes or is it a special 'trail' of a mango.

I love Alfonso and Honey mangoes. Which one is the African mango?

People there is NO magic pill, potion, fruit, or tea that will be your weight loss answer!!! If you haven't found the answer to losing weight you aren't working hard enough!!! Being well toned takes dedication and will power! If there was an easy answer obesity wouldn't be the problem that it is!
