You don’t have to be a supermodel to photograph well in a bathing suit or bikini. Following are tips for looking svelte, confident, and photo-ready the next time the lens catches you showing some skin!
Stand Tall
Poor posture can add several pounds to your look. Not only does slouching make you appear shorter, but also it draws attention to any mid-section cushioning. Stand straight with shoulders rolled back and chest forward for a thinner (and more confident!) look.
Work Your Angles
According to America’s Next Top Model’s Nigel Barker, you can instantly shave pounds off your appearance by placing one hand on your hip and looking over your shoulder. Nigel explains, “You’re twisting your silhouette… and creating lots of different angles on your body so that [the] eye immediately looks all over the body, not just at one spot.”
The Most Flattering Swimsuits for Your Shape
Put Your Best Foot Forward (Literally!)
A trick long used by celebrities and beauty pageant contestants alike, placing one leg slightly in front of you creates a more confident stance and the illusion of a longer, leaner look.

Simulate the “S” Shape
Squaring yourself straight on to the camera can make you look flat or (if you’re full-figured) wide. Create curves in all the right spots by emulating the “S” pose. The stance, long used by swimsuit models, involves pushing your pelvis as far as you can to one side and your upper body to the opposite side. Finally, cross your legs to get that oh-so-feminine and ultra-flattering hourglass shape.

Watch Your Hands
You can have a great pose down, but if you awkwardly curl up your hands in front of you or to the sides, you exude an utter lack of confidence in front of the lens. If you’re not sure where to place your hands, go to the old model standby—place one hand on your hip and the other relaxed down your side.
Wear Big Accessories
Oversized accessories draw attention and make other areas look diminutive in comparison. Invest in wide-brimmed sun hats, oversized earrings, and large sunglasses. Bonus: They’ll instantly ante up your poolside and beachside style.

Direct the Photographer
The photographer’s stance is just as important as your own. If you follow one tip, this is it: never let anyone shoot up at you. Ask the photographer to shoot from above, with the camera pointed down at you. This forces you to angle your head up, open your eyes wider, and straighten your posture. Plus, this trick makes your face the focal point of the picture, making your body appear smaller in comparison.
