    How to Look Taller

Before picture of SueBefore picture of SueBy Donna Duarte-Ladd

Frustrated by the lack of options in petite sizes, working mother Sue falls back on safe separates that do nothing for her shape. Boxy blazers and long skirts overwhelm her 5-foot frame, and the blocks of solid color (olive jacket, dark brown skirt, dark leggings) segment her body, making her appear even shorter. Sue's stark neutrals are low-maintenance, but also low on style. Photo by Perry Hagopian

    The Solution

The following pieces helped elongate Sue's stature without overwhelming her petite frame. Photo by Perry Hagopian

Jacket: This swing coat's wide lapels and the dress's scoop neck reveal Sue's decolletage, drawing attention to her face. The ¾-length sleeves make it look like Sue has a higher waistline, so her legs seem longer. PRIM New York Swing Coat, $180 (in orchid and woodbine); PrimCollection.com.

Dress: In general, hemlines that graze the knee and show a little leg elongate petite types. The bright floral print adds youthful energy. Garnet Hill Ingleside Silk Dress, $158; GarnetHill.com.

Belt: Pre-makeover, Sue hid under shape-less layers that weighed her down. A waist-cinching belt highlights her trim middle-and keeps the dress's large-scale print from swallowing her up. Woven Trimmed Leatherette Belt, $5.80; Forever21.com for stores.

Shoes: Three-inch wedges add height and the nude color blends in with Sue's legs, creating a long, lithe line from knee to toe. Dexter for Payless Kylie Wedges, $26.99; Payless.com.

    Top It Off

Floaty blouses aren't off limits when the cut is trim. H&M Blouse, $29.95; HM.com for stores. Photo by Stuart Tyson/Studio D

    Fit to Print

Prints should be tailored (or belted) like this shift so they don't swamp a petite frame. Tulle Sleeveless Dress, $68; Tulle4Us.com. Photo by Stuart Tyson/Studio D

    See 12 figure-flattering dresses under $50.

    Wear the Pants

Shorter women can wear capris. The trick: slightly tapered legs and a hem that hits just at the ankle. J.Crew Minnie Pant in Stretch Twill, $89.50; JCrew.com. Photo by Stuart Tyson/Studio D

Want to look slimmer? Sit beside someone who is heavier than you.

I am 5'3", my husband is 6'7", my four sons range from 6'3 to 6'6, and my teenage daughter is 5'9". Even my oldest daughter is an inch taller than I am. Believe you me, standing next to people who are shorter than me is a real treat!

Another yahoo article to remind us that we're simply not acceptable the way we are.

i'm 5ft tall and i love it!! i agree with wearing pieces that flatter one's shape and size but it's never my goal to 'look taller'!

Woman don't go after us guys who are only 4 ft 27 inches tall....

well........I am only interested in smart chicks anyway..:)))

        Cute Leon. ;0)

Caroline, I am surprised you did not get Leon's point. You wouldn't go out with Leon because he is only 4 feet 27 inches but would you go out with him if he was 6 feet 3 inches? Do the math.

she was wearing flats in the first picture and high heels in the second. that might have something to do with her feeling tall.

Love yourself, love your body. For my petite body, I can't wear skirts or dresses below my knee and I don't wear skirts/dresses any higher than four inches above the knee. Heels are good too but anything higher than four-inches I'll walk funny. teehee

Why bother...Good things come in small packages!

Why on earth would somebody want to look taller? It's not like being short is a sickness or disability. How ridiculous! I am short and I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      • try2laughoften 3 months ago
Being taller often helps stout people look less stout. Most women would like to look or perhaps, even be more slender. My doctor once told me that if he stretched me to 7 feet - I wouldn't have a weight problem lol. I'm 4'10". I wouldn't mind being taller if it looked like there was less poundage. Not everything is ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel sorry for short people. What's so great about being a sawed off runt?
      • Kransky 3 months ago
Why don't you post a real pic of yourself, Caroline, so we can all see how perfect you are. And @A Yahoo! User, that really depends on if you're a guy or a girl, now doesn't it?

I guess that they didn't have me in mind since I'm five foot fifteen.

      Be yourself. Don't be pretentious.

Maybe it's just me, but as a guy, height doesn't really matter to me. I don't notice it very much, unless someone is like a head shorter or taller than me. Even then, I don't mind.
    • Suzanne  •  Vancouver, British Columbia  •  2 months ago
I am very tall and my problem was when I was a kid I always looked older than my age. I always had to carry a piece of ID with my date of birth written on it in order to pay the student's price. Now that I am older, I look younger. Try to figure it out. Nevertheless, it never really bothered me or hindered me a living a normal life. You have to accept yourself the way you are.

      It is awsome being tall.

Sue needs someone to take her out and find her some decent clothes. Even the after outfits made her look just old, not tall.
