How Long Can You Go Without Sleep?

How much sleep do you really need? How much sleep do you really need?Parents might feel like they forgo sleep as soon as they bring their baby home, but the longest any person has gone without sleep (on purpose) has been 11 straight days.

There were a few side effects.

Randy Gardner was a 17-year-old high school student in California when he decided to avoid sleeping for 264 hours in a row. It was 1964, and, according to researchers, he ended up suffering from memory problems, paranoia, and hallucinations because of it. Other studies have linked sleep deprivation in mice to the development of characteristics associated with Alzheimer's disease, and some have shown that chronic sleep loss may cause obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, and diabetes among human and animal test subjects alike.

Sleeping helps our brains develop and make neurological connections, bolsters our immune systems, consolidates memories, process information and helps our bodies heal. According to a 2011 National Sleep Foundation poll, 43 percent of American say that they rarely or never get a good night's sleep on weeknights; 15 percent of adults and 7 percent of kids age 13 to 18 reported that they get less than six hours of sleep per weeknight.

So, how much sleep do you really need? Researchers say that there is no "magic number," but in general women sleep longer than men, and babies sleep longer than the elderly. Our bodies actually force us to sleep in tiny increments (called microsleeps) when we've gone too long without rest.

As readers know, sleep is a must.
The mind must re-charge. The body just does what it is told.

in the military during training soldiers get as little as 4 hours ( at the most) of sleep and are pushed beyond their physical limits.
      • Kevin 2 months ago
        ok, cool story bro.

They are also pushed beyond their moral limits.

Damn Jean that was a stupid comment. Uggh... Why don't you try to be a soldier? Or better yet, why don't you try to be a 5 star General. Then you can fix everything you want with the army.

Sadly, I do a 30+ hour day at least once per week. Full-time work and full-time school just don't go together!

I've one 8 days, and thats not something to brag about. It was during finals with college and I was working at the same time. Forced with too many projects with too many deadlines overlaying eachother. It was the most painful feeling ever. Your body starts to shutdown in various places. from like your arms to knees even. You start to see things that arnt really there. By the final day I ended up blacking out in a public location. Its not something you should do, i dont even think going as long as 4 days is wise... i get sick easily ever since then.

I have worked the graveyard shift (12.30 am to 9 am) since 1999 and sleep in the afternoons from 3 pm to 8 pm and all I can say is this is never enough. The only day I can really make up for lost sleep is on Saturday, which is when I practically sleep the whole day and wake up in the afternoon. Forget about Sunday because that when I have to prepare and go to work the same night.

Why do babies and toddlers force themselves to stay awake? I hate to watch them avoid sleeping even though it may be cute and funny at times.
    • OMG_OMG  •  2 months ago
OMG!!! If I go less than 8 hours sleep in a night I turn into a real prick the next day.

I'm no expert but you may want to try different foods.. fruit, veggies before hitting the pillow. Air circulation is important, install a ceiling fan in your bedroom. Darkness too is important. I can't really say for sure if these ideas work as I am a good sleeper. Good Luck!

I used to go entire weekends without sleep when I was younger, and still go more than 24 hrs without sleep now, You don't know tired until you've been so tired that you start halucinating.

It helps to talk a nap once a day. I have sleep problems too. I force myself to take naps and after a bit of training, I am now able to take a nap during the day. At night i sleep 4 hours or so.

I'm in high school, and my classmates wonder why my average was a 91 last year. I tell them: it's because I go to bed between 9-10 PM and don't spend all night on the computer. Sleep makes you smarter!

I say 30 hours because your body needs recharge.
    • barb55  •  2 months ago
I think that there is a magic number and it is 7. The body and brain need recharging during sleep and 7-8 hours are recomended by doctors. Just because a person can stay awake for a long time does not mean they should. All bodies need rest and rejuvenation.

So did he load up on caffeine to stay awake that long?
I have bipolar disorder, and insomnia is no laughing matter. It can be the result of a mood disorder or a sleep disorder, or iron deficiency or even a thyroid problem. It's best to get to the root of the problem so it can be treated properly.

if he would have been listening to any political speeches he would have been asleep in seconds

I'm happy with 5-7 hours sleep a night, more than 8 makes me feel drugged. I often go 24 hrs without sleep with few problems, but more than 48 hrs and the hallucinations start taking over. The mind stops functioning normally and goes into dream mode while still awake... it's a very strange feeling.
