It seems that as soon as the clock strikes February, the streets are flooded with streams of red and pink. Whether you love or loathe Valentine's Day, a little extra romance in the home goes a long way. So, whether you're celebrating the occasion with someone special or just want to treat yourself to a pretty and comfortable space, here are a few ways to add more romance to your home.
1. Lighting
Everyone looks better in soft lighting. Take the edge off after a long day at work under harsh fluorescents and slip into something a little more flattering by putting the main lights in your home on a dimmer. Better yet, forgo overhead lighting altogether in favour of the soft glow of candlelight.
2. Flowers
Never underestimate the power of blooms to freshen up a whole space. While a big bouquet may set you back quite a bit around this time of year, ask your local florist about buying a few single stems - you'll be surprised by how one or two flowers by your bedside can transform your whole room. Or why not treat yourself to a classic potted orchid you'll enjoy for weeks to come?
3. Warm colours and exotic prints
Turn the heat up in your space by adding a few accessories, such as pillows or throws in warm tones like red or bright pink - colours associated with romance. Animal prints bring a certain hint of sexiness and may be just the fun needed to help warm you and your loved one on a chilly winter evening.
4. Put it in writing
Take a cue from French decor magazines and write out your favourite phrase, poem or song lyrics in your best script across a large mirror using a non-permanent marker. It's a fun twist on this decorating staple and you can change the text throughout the year to suit your mood and season.
