S-E-X is a critical part of our overall well-being, both emotionally and physically. So when we decided to track down all the specific reasons why getting it on is good for us, it was no surprise that the list was long. These seven reasons will hopefully inspire you to take a romp in the hay today (and on the regular).
- Dr. Gordan Josephson, director of the New York Nasal and Sinus Center, explains that our body gets a rush of adrenaline during orgasm, causing tissue in the nose to shrink and opening up nasal passageways which allow us to breathe better.
- A study at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania found that individuals who have sex once or twice a week show 30 per cent higher levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody which is known to boost the immune system.
- According to WebMD, sex increases the level of oxytocin in the body, which has been proven to improve sleep.
- Also known as the “love hormone”, oxytocin releases endorphins immediately before orgasm. This surge of endorphins acts as a pain reliever to anything from headaches to arthritis, and even PMS.
- Apparently, our mate’s calming words aren’t the only thing they can do for us when we’re feeling down. A study of 293 women in 2002 found that women in couples who did not use condoms were less subject to depression than those who did. The theory is that Prostoglandin, a hormone found only in semen, modulates female hormones. (But we’re still big-time advocates for safe sex!)
- Kegel muscles, the same muscle that is responsible for controlling the flow of urine, get a darn good workout during sex.
- Half an hour of sex burns 80 calories – the same amount of calories as 30 minutes on the treadmill. We’d pick getting busy any day.
