The four keys to a longer, healthier life

Here's a “Well, duh!” statement for you: if you don’t smoke, eat healthfully, exercise lots, and take it easy on the booze, you’ll live longer. This is according to a new study from the Center for Disease Control, published in the American Journal of Public Health.

I guess I shouldn’t be too sarcastic, but this really just confirms a bunch of stuff that we should already know. First off, this is not the only study to make pretty much exactly the same statement. Three years ago this study of over 20,000 men and women found that precisely these same four behaviours could help you live about 14 years longer.

People want to believe that they can lose weight without exercise (or with just a little bit of time on some “miracle” machine), or that high-protein diets are key to burning fat, or that drinking alcohol is good for you, but if you used your common sense for a moment, you’d engage in those behaviours that you know – and that science proves – are beneficial:

My point in all of this: stop paying attention to the latest fads, stop making excuses for bad behaviours, and do what deep down you really know is right for living a longer, healthier life.

    Finally, about that drinking thing...

I do have one hypothesis, however, and that it might be that my thirst for the hooch is indirectly good for me because it is a reflection of my mindset. I’ve heard it bandied about that people who like to drink are adventure seekers. These same people can also seek adventure with lots of intense activity. I don’t know of any studies that show this, but it’s been suggested that highly active people are more likely to be drinkers than teetotalers.

It’s all food, and drink, for thought.

Thanks for the four keys that leads to longer, healthier life but i disgree with the notion that highly active people are more likely to be drinkers. There are highly active people i know that are not drinkers.

La question n'est pas "comment faire pour vivre plus longtemps?" mais : pourquoi vivre plus longtemps?.

How about feeding some of the 20,000 kids under the age of 5 who will starve to death tomorrow. We need a fat tax so that the morons who found this 'article' informative can have less money to over eat with and that money can be spent feeding kids who might grow up to become legitimate journalists unlike that worms here at yahoo who should be the next 20,000 to starve to death!

If you don't have longevity genes, do healthy things; but if you long genes, then party on!!!

Also...I know some older ppl who drink like a fish and smoke like a chiminey and they're like ..in their 80's. There's no telling how long you will live.

Eat natural foods that come from farms, not factories, go easy on the salt, educate yourself about vitamins, get your heart rate up for at least 15 minutes daily (this includes sex, people! Well, if you're doing it right), drink water, and try your best to live in harmony with the rest of the world.
And if you're having a problem with stress, do what I do -- smoke a crap load of pot. =)!

I think eating healthier, and being more physically active are great. Nothing mentioned about a strong close family life, or sex, or anything... I'm of the belief that if a man stares a naked breasts for at least 10 mins a week, he will live longer and healthier also.

there are no guarantees in this life. we really don't know how long any one person will live. that said, life is precious though so we should not take it for granted

Hmmm, my Grandmother smoked, drank alcohol, ate fried foods and heaps of starchy foods... She was taken out at 90 by a strangulated hernia, only because she was too busy doing stuff to go to a doctor for some annoying pain... Study THAT!!!

Just drink a lot. It adds years to your life. For instance if you drink a sixpack every day, you will look like a seventy-five year old at the age of 50.

The doctor told me I had 3 weeks left to live and said I should quit smoking, drinking and chasing women. "They'll be the longest 3 weeks you ever had."
