Food Expiration Dates 101: How Long to Keep Spices, Peanut Butter and Other Pantry Items

    Food Expiration Dates 101

    1. Most Dried Ground Spices
Unopened or opened: 2 to 3 years
When it comes to spices, fresh is best, but they should remain flavorful for up to three years. While spices do not spoil, anything older than three years will most likely be lacking in flavor, aroma and health benefits. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct heat or sunlight, closed tightly when not in use. To test when an herb or spice is still potent, rub or crush a small amount in your hand then taste and smell it. If the aroma and flavor is weak, it should be discarded.

    2. Olive Oil
Unopened: 2 years in the pantry or refrigerator
Opened: 18 to 24 months in the pantry or refrigerator
Store olive oil in a cool, dark place. Keeping it in the refrigerator will extend its shelf life but may cause cloudiness -- this will not effect the quality. Once it is brought back to room temperature it will retain its normal color and texture.

    3. Brown Rice
    Pantry: 3 to 6 months
    Refrigerator: 6 to 12 months
    Freezer: 12 to 18 months
Due to its high oil content, pantry storage can cause brown rice to spoil quickly. Once the package is opened, store brown rice in the freezer in a heavy-duty freezer bag.

    4. Wild, White, Jasmine and Basmati Rice
    Unopened or opened: keeps indefinitely
Store uncooked rice in a cool, dry place. Once opened, transfer to an airtight container and store in the pantry, freezer or refrigerator.

    5. Honey
    Unopened or opened: keeps indefinitely
Honey never goes bad. Be sure to store it in a cool, dry place like the pantry because refrigeration will accelerate the crystallization process. Over time, honey may change color or become cloudy, but it is still safe to eat if stored properly.

So you'd think when a title mentions peanut butter - they'd tell you how long you can keep peanut butter! Sheesh. I'd also like to know how long you can keep ketchup and jam (both refrigerated).

peanut butter can't go bad bc of the high sugar content, but eventually it dries out enough that the texture is not great.... after opening, try to use within a few months

Can I help wash the plate. Did you dip it in ketchup at all. How about a dill pickle; have one of those? Gee, this news is so exciting!,

Thimbleberry; I have another brilliant question since you live in Campbell River. Does Campbell's soup come from the river?

I generally keep these things until they're all gone. That may be a bit too 'sciencey' for some folks, though.

I bought a "family pack" of ground black pepper in 1997. Still good almost 15 years later. Next time I'll buy an even bigger one to see if it last until 2050.

I don't think that anything even stays in the pantry for a month let alone 12. Coming from a LARGE family has it's benefits. Nothing ever, I MEAN NEVER goes bad, eaten way before expiry date. And on my own, I always keep to the rule of 'use what you buy' and 'if it stays in the cupboard for a month, it's time to use it'

Last year I bought a bottle of Orange Crush, in one of those old brown 'ribbed' bottles. The actual pop was still in it, from about 1950. Anyone want a sip? It's still here. What was the 'best before' date on that, anyway?

The foods mentioned are all foods that are good for you, but like everything else in moderation I suppose. Amazing how all these foods now seem to have to rely on the refridgerator.

The worst thing you can do is refrigerate olive oil, It just needs to bekept out of the light.

      I'm pretty sure you can get Botulism from unpasteurized Honey that goes bad; I ate honey once that had gone bad and I got a stomach ache. Has to be really old, tho' and it lasts a lot longer if you keep it in the Fridge. Eat a little Honey or Chamomile Tea before a long trip and you'll never have to pee - they help you hold your bladder (not good for a Bladder infection, tho', take a Potassium pill n drink Fresh squeezed Lemon in lots of Brita Water and whole milk (n cream) or fish oil & Avoid liquor, sugar, caffeine, black pepper & rye, also get that yeast infection under control & pee right after sex - O, n gentlemen: Wash it & maybe try some yeast creme on it, too... True dat! ) Jam lasts about a year, give or take, but keep it in the Fridge once opened until it goes moldy and don't believe everything you hear about Peanut Butter - it's good protein & Delish n lasts a year or so after the expiry - if it gives you a stomach ache, throw it out ! ( ;
PS. Overuse of Nystatin cream (read: STATINS/Cholesterol Drugs) contributes to muscle shrinkage (ie. Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue) so easy does it; but never use Monistat Creme if you might get or be pregnant as it can cause Cleft Palate in ur Baby. Ladies?
