Fashion without function: the dress that weighs over 100 pounds

Yasmin Le Bon wears the Stephane Rolland 100-lb dress.(Photo by Antonio de Moraes Barros Filho/WireImage) Haute couture has nothing to do with practicality. The hand-made, over-the-top creations rarely make it beyond the runway or editorial spreads. They celebrate fashion, but rarely demand to be worn.

One dress in Stephane Rolland’s latest couture collection captured our attention, but just the thought of wearing it makes shoulders ache in anticipation of its heaviness.

    It weighs 110 pounds.

Former supermodel Yasmin Le Bon turned heads — and made headlines — when she slowly sashayed down the runway wearing Rolland’s “monumental” 45-metre-long red dress. Two assistants helped her navigate the catwalk with the burdensome train.

Watch Le Bon’s walk at 4:08 below.

Made with nearly 150 yards of fabric, the red silk jersey gown, adorned with “assorted lacquered metal panels on the bustier and down the front of the skirt,” was the show-stopping piece in Rolland’s “highly-sculpturalHaute Couture Spring-Summer 2012 show in Paris.

And I thought Melania Trump’s 50-pound wedding gown was intimidating in its weight.

Some critics are asking, what’s the point of a dress like this? I’m not sure that it needs one.

It was one of the most beautiful runway shows I have ever seen!!! The dresses were actually "wearable". The movement of the fabric was mesmerizing. The delicate folds of accent fabric reminded me of the fine gils of a mushroom. Truly inspiring!! As far as the 110 lb red dress, well, at least it was pretty, which is more than I can say for most runway fare...

There should be rules about all this...
The first one is 1. The model must weigh more than the clothing she wears

Interesting. The models wereing the regular 1960's si fi costumes managed to do the zombe face walk. No emotion. The model in the heavy costume did show the discomfort in her face, but so would I if I was wearing something that weighted more than me. I bet she was glad to get that thing off.

Maybe I imagined it, but i could swear I saw a fleeting look on her face "WTF is this piece of shit anyway?"

A good model never shows her agony in her face. Some of the shoes and stuff they have to wear. They must grin and bare it.

Why are these girls so emaciated? As i get older i really believe that many of these designers don't like women. These 13 year old scary skinny models do not look like any women i have ever seen and i have been to Paris, London and New York. I love Armani and Valentino...they like women. (Not that models should be chubby or even average but c'mon!)

It is much easier to design and sew something in a straight line, than to accommodate curves. How add in a bunch of gay guys - who are attracted to
the MALE form, and you really don't have to wonder why the models could
pass for young boys, except for the makeup and hairstyles.

Sorry, l meant Now, and not How!

This model is not emaciated. Look at her waist and thighs. This is not typical of runway models. I was actually pleased when I saw that she looked like a normal, albeit grumpy, person.

Crazy. 100 lbs is akin to carrying an older child. You can't possibly do anything with that dress. Totally non -functional.In addition, physical injuries can happen-neck, shoulder, back and that's not including faling. Nuts!!

As the article mentioned, most of the clothes shown on the runway do not ever make the street. I believe these clothes are made to show the designer's real sense of creativity & design. Their street clothes fashion pay the bills.

Too bad that the people who decide this is fashionable have far more money than style or taste. They should take some of their cash and buy the models some food. Too damn skinny to be healthy.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. They all look deathly.

Totally pointless and worthless creation. Other than the wasted volumes of material, there is nothing spectalcular about this dress design wise. Was the designer trying for the Guiness record for the heaviest dress. What a loser.

Probably the weight of at least 2 of those poor women.
