Does waking up earlier mean waking up happier?

(Thinkstock)We’ve heard it before: “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

But does waking up early make us happier?

    A recent Daily Mail article
claims so. Simon Parke, author of “Solitude: Recovering the Power of Alone,” writes that waking up early — he recommends an intimidating wake-up call of 5am — lets us begin the day in peace:

“Watching dawn break through the kitchen window really does ‘make light of the day’ whatever it may hold,” he writes.

“In the uninterrupted stillness — people don’t phone, text or email at this time — you hold the new day like you hold a new-born child, wondering what will be.”

Parke isn’t alone is praising the wee hours of the morning.

Gretchen Rubin, author of “The Happiness Project” claims that her resolution to get up earlier boosted her happiness:

“One of the great challenges of a happiness project is to think about time: whether the structure of our ordinary days reflects our values, interests, and temperament. Sometimes, making a shift like waking earlier or changing a daily routine can make a big difference,” Rubin wrote in Psychology Today.

[See also: Sleeping can help fight stress]

For Rubin, the uninterrupted early hours are her most productive.

“I spend the hour from 6:00 to 7:00 working at my desk, and I love the light, and the quiet, and the sense of focus and freedom from interruption that I have during that hour.”

Last year, a study supported these observations by Parke and Rubin, finding that early risers were less likely to suffer from depression and stress than their sleeping-in counterparts.

“There are morning people and evening people, and morning people tend to be healthier and happier as well as having lower body mass indices,” Dr Joerg Huber of Roehampton University summarized the study.

Would you wake up earlier for a health-and-happiness boost?

I woke up at 6am this morning. It was not a fun experience. But by the time I was home from the gym, I felt refreshed and ready to get on with my day, considerably more energized and upbeat than I would have been had I pressed the snooze button a few times and skipped the squats. So I guess I’m on Team Early too.

Early risers, share your secrets. What are your wake-up strategies?

Here are a five ways to wake up looking great, which will make your early morning even better.

Cancer society is the BIGGEST joke and fraud ever happened, it seems to help with the grief process for some people to donate and join marathons...but i just lost a loved one who told me to promise her NOT to ever support the cancer society, and i dont intend to.

They keep talking about the 'light' at 5 or 6 a.m. Certainly not in Canada during this part of the year! I'm staying in bed until sunrise, thank you very much.

Hi 1971... If you did that in the north where I live, you'd be sleeping for all but 5 hours a day in the dead of winter and not sleeping a wink in the summer. ;) :)
      • D.D.S. with Love. 3 months ago
        ...likewise, I'm sure!
      • Jim 3 months ago
Yeah, in December, I'd be waking about 8:00am, - about 4-5 hours too early, and, in the summer, a full 8 hours before the sun has the water warm enough to swim, - even in our pool!!

Quote: "...that early risers were less likely to suffer from depression and stress than their sleep in counterparts."
That's probably because excessive sleeping is a symptom of depression. That's like doing a study discovering that people who buy dog biscuits are more likely to own dogs.

An even easier way to achieve piece is to not have a cell phone. People never used to be in constant, instant communication and the world got along just fine LOL I'm way less stressed than other people, and I'm convinced it's because I'm not tied to a phone. I get up at 8 a.m. and I'm happy as a clam, and 3 hours richer in sleep :)

I don't own a cell phone either and I think you are spot on. I lack the desire to constantly check to see if people have contacted me, I lack the desire to find out what everyone else is up to at all hours of the day and I have nobody trying to get in touch with me while I am out of the house doing things that are important to me and my family.

NO cell phones allowed in our home or cars except when on long trip then we buy a cheap throw away emergency cell phone. If we do not use it then we donate it to the Salvation Army.

getting up early makes me tired all day...I'm a nite person don't go to bed till 2 or 3 am
    • Marvellous Maiden  •  Brantford, Ontario  •  3 months ago
I usually go to bed around 6 am. I am self employed and set my own hours. I am lucky I don't have to live by a clock. I get up when I want and go to bed when I want. I'll watch the sunrise and then go to bed, thanks.

I'm curious, what do you do?
      • Bang! Pow! Boom! 3 months ago
She lives in Brantford, that says it all. Self employment in Brantford means she's dealing crack, or marijuana, or both.

Honestly, I'm jealous. I wish I could sleep at that time. It would work better for me!

I wake up early and I work late. I'm not fat, and I'm not depressed, stressed or bald. So there goes that theory.

What a load of crap! I feell VERY happy each Saturday when I get up at 9am having slept for a nice 9-10 hours. The rest of the week I get up at 5am on 6-7hrs sleep and I can whole heartedly say I am DEFINITELY not happier as a result of waking up at that time of day.
    • Geep  •  3 months ago
Yeah... until we all get up at 5 and the you *will* be getting texts and emails. I avoid it all by not having a cell phone :)

"...“Watching dawn break through the kitchen window really does ‘make light of the day’ whatever it may hold,” he writes.", IF you can afford a house, or IF your tiny apartment has a kitchen window. Facing East. Poetic asshole.

I can't watch the sunrise in the morning. It rises at like 11am here!
    • dudette  •  Saskatoon, Saskatchewan  •  3 months ago
how about ppl who work til midnight..that is their 5 oclock quitting time..sleep is important..I don't think they can go to bed right away and still get up at 5 or 6 am..do you go to bed as soon as you get home after 5 oclock??
    • nrt  •  London, Ontario  •  3 months ago
Yeah I wake up at 2pm and never felt better :)
    • PrairieMermaid  •  Regina, Saskatchewan  •  3 months ago
It doesnt need to be early to enjoy quiet time. Getting ENOUGH sleep is more important. Also, I believe each person has their own sleep cycle, hence the early birds and the night owls. Sure enjoy gettin up at dawn to watch the sunrise and hear the birds chirp once in awhile, but after a few days I need some sleep. And thats going to bed early, say 930, in order to get my 8 hours or so.

People around me get up & out early to get to work by 8 a.m. First they have to clean the snow off their cars. Some even clean the walk. Sometimes, I'm happy to shovel, too; sometimes I'm happy to stay in bed. Usually, I'm happy not to have to punch a clock. Whatever. Keep smilin' !(They'll wonder what you're up to....)

Happiness is measurable only in your waking hours. You cannot assign any emotion to sleep per se.So if you claim to be happier sleeping then your life is definitely not happy.

When the kids are running around and you're making lunches and it's a line up at the bathroom, so you can get to work and get the kids off....there is NO peace and quiet!!!
    • choppy61  •  Edmonton, Alberta  •  3 months ago
According to my study Its not the time of day you wake up, its actually the amount of peaceful sleep you got! Duh! Yes its calm at 5am but it's also calm between 11:59pm - 4:59am too! And I would suggest turning off all alarmed electronic devises during this time to ensure that calm and peacefulness. Duh!!
There, they can send the cheque to me now for my research and look Mom, no University degree or unpaid student loan to accomplish it. :-b That degree in common sense sure paid off. Thx Mom, Dad and my junior high school principle. You know whats mostly taught in Universities now? Grammar! lol They learn how to sell thgemselves and BS their way into jobs they havent got a clue how to do! That's why you see sooo many grammar Kings and Queens on these sites! You ever noticed how they cant even get the point unless you use the right there, their or they're in a sentence? Yep, common sense is a foreign word to them but they have awesome grammar! lmao!!
