Cindy Crawford Pulls Plug on 10-Year-Old Daughter’s Modeling Career

In a surprising about face, former supermodel Cindy Crawford says her daughter Kaia Gerber will need to wait until she's 17 to be a model. "At this point, she's too young to pursue a career. There aren't even a handful of jobs for a 10-year-old girl," Crawford told The Daily. Crawford was initially enthusiastic about her daughter's foray into modeling.

Gerber, who looks strikingly like her mother, was an overnight sensation when she modeled for Versace's new line of children's clothing in January 2011. On the shoot, Crawford says she didn't want to "...be a stage mom and make her nervous. She knew I was there looking out for her. She’s done little modeling things with me, but it was always with me, and this was just her. And I really wanted her to have that experience." She adds that she was surprised at how the quickly the images of her daughter wearing a cropped leather jacket and mini-skirt made headlines around the world. In a press release after the shoot, Donatella Versace said, "Like her mother, Kaia has a very special gift. The camera really, really loves her." At the height of her modeling days, Crawford was a muse for the fashion house's founder, Gianni Versace, who was tragically murdered in 1997.

Reportedly, Kaia isn't pitching a fit about mom's change of heart. According to Crawford, her daughter quipped, "I might model first because you don't have to know how to do anything, but then I want to be a baby nurse."

While Crawford didn't go into more detail about her decision, recently the mistreatment of underage models has been in the spotlight. The Council of American Fashion Designers asked its members to only use models over the age of 16 to strut the catwalks at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. After his show on Monday, February 13, 2012, designer Marc Jacobs was slammed in the press for knowingly sending a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old down the runway. Concerns range from younger girls being more susceptible to eating disorders to having their photographs taken while they change clothing for a photo shoot or fashion show.

Paulina Porizkova, another supermodel from Crawford's generation, has been outspoken about the abuse she says is endemic to the industry. In a new documentary on modeling called About Face, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month, Porizkova said that she and the other young models were so accustomed to inappropriate behavior from agents and photographers that, "What people called sexual harassment, we called compliments."

mother knows best she is too young let her enjoy her youth
she looks older then she really is migth but to much pressure for a younger child
might have too many stress lines to worry
about the competion. Enjoy your youth.

Who's arguing against Cindy's decision to remove her child from modelling??

I've watched the show, "Toddlers & Tiaras", and I can't help noticing that most of the Mothers are obese women who pay very little attention to their own appearance. However, they spend thousands of dollars on, in most cases, their pre-school daughters buying outrages outfits, makeup, hair extensions, fake tans, dental work, (partials/bridges to hide their missing baby teeth), etc., while most of them don't look like they have a, "pot-to-piss-in"! These women should put their money towards therapy and counselling, or at least, save the money for their children's counselling, because, eventually they're going to need it as bad as Mom does!!

Overgrown 8-year-olds dressing their kids up like dolls and cannibalizing their children's lives. they should not be allowed custody of those kids.

The mothers' weight is not the issue. Treating ths like things is.

The industry will always need children and babies for modeling, but it should be very strictly regulated. The Toddlers and Tiara crap should be illegal!

Good for her. Now if someone can try talking to the parents of TODDLERS AND TIARAS.

because costs less to produce and sells at a higher price.

That's what kids do today and usually there are shorts under the skirts.
      • LibertyF 2 months ago
because they are too stupid not to think that short dress will attract predators even faster. They will think: she is looking for it.

There is absolutely no reason why a 10 year old can't model, any more than a 10 year old can't act. However, what and how they model is another matter altogether. Making a 10 year old look like a very sexy 17 year old is not acceptable.

YES, underage models should be banned on the runway, and excessive makeup should be banned on kids in clothing ads. Why are people praising Cindy Crawford? She allowed her daughter to be tarted up like a hooker -- this kid is TEN. Crawford didn't "pull the plug" until people started objecting to this totally inappropriate treatment of a child. I mean -- TEN. The kid should be climbing trees, not posing like a whippet in heat. This is a TERRIBLE example for little girls everywhere. I've watched as makeup on kids has gone from minimal in the 80's to full adult evening look -- and this is wrong.

girls aren' tmature enough to handle the stress and all that goes with this job until at least 18 and then some still aren't ready..I give Cindy a big cheer for seeing this and halting her daughter in midstride..For heavens sake let her be the child and young girl that she is.(and a very pretty one at that). We are old for a very long time but young for so short a time.

This girl is TEN. TEN. She is shown supposedly looking sexy with windblown hair holding her breasts, people. THIS IS NOT APPROPRIATE.

Hey face it ,it was Cindy's daughter- she let her daughter follow in her footsteps, and she realised she made a mistake. No matter how perfect you think you are ,we all make bad decisions at one time or another.
    • canuck1st  •  Barrie, Ontario  •  2 months ago
Cindy ALLOWED her daughter to be photographed for Versace's cover and you can bet she vetted the photos beforehand. I believe that she has pulled her daughter ONLY because there was an international outcry at the intentionally provocative pose -certainly to the delight of the pedophiles. Cindy isn't that stupid that she wouldn't know that but still chose to put her daughter out there. Disgusting on her part -that you would sell your daughter like that - I don't care if the daughter "wants" to do that. Cindy is supposed to be the parent protecting her child.

Maybe if parents start acting like responsible parents and let kids be kids. Kudos to Crawford for pulling her daughter out of modelling.

I agree with some commenters that the photos of this little 10-year-old girl were totally inappropriate to begin with. Perhaps Mom finally clued into that fact, a little late now that pedophiles around the world have pictures of her child to add to their sicko collections.

The idea of children dressing like children, rather than like miniature adults, seems to have gone from our culture. It's very sad, for what it says about the passing of the enlightened notion that childhood should be a special and protected time of a person's life.
