Bootcut jeans remain best-selling denim style

Denim trends come and go pretty quickly, and  your entire outfit can look dated if you're caught in an old style. With skinny jeans, and straight-leg styles seemingly everywhere and a renewed interest in '70s flares, we'd thought the bootcut silhouette that was had completely disappeared. But we were so wrong.

    Photos: The hot denim trend

eBay has tallied up and categorized the three million pairs of jeans sold on their auction site over the past year. Of them 793,289 pairs were bootcut denim—over three times more than any other style of jeans. We're shocked that so many people are not only wearing but buying new bootcut jeans. They are said to be a universally flattering style, but we thought they had reached their peak in the late '90s and early '00s. When you think about it, it took a long time for skinny jeans to catch on with the masses, so maybe bootcut hasn't phased out out? Or what's more likely, eBay is a large sampling of the entire country—not necessarily those who jump on fashion trends. Either way, bootcut jeans are still number one and if this eBay chart means anything they'll remain at the top for years to come.

Other best-selling denim styles on eBay are straight leg jeans (215,353 sold), skinny jeans (214,405 sold), flare jeans (197,790 sold), and low-rise jeans (147,826). Really, people still like showing their thongs in low-rise styles? Ugh. Rounding out the top 10 are relaxed fit jeans, cropped jeans, boyfriend jeans, wide leg jeans, and denim leggings (jeggings). Only 11,616 people purchased jeggings on eBay! Jeggings are usually very affordable, so perhaps people don't feel the need to buy them on the auction site for a  discounted price. Or maybe the majority of the country doesn't like or care about the trendy legging hybrid. We're also surprised colored denim didn't make the top 10.

Boot cut are the best. If you're the slightest bit heavier than you should be, skinny at the bottom makes you look like a balloon.

I agree. Skinny at the bottom is only good for smaller hips and flat tummies. The rest of the world needs to stay away from leggings, jeggings, and anything that tapers in at the ankles. Otherwise, they will look disproportionate.

yup, if you have broad hips your lower half looks like a lightbulb in them.

Flared jeans make your legs look shorter if they are already short and look best on people with long legs, and those skiny jeans really only look good on skinny people with long thin legs, boot cut jeans seem to look good on most people, that is all I wear as I mostly wear boots. But wear what you want don't let these stupid articles dictate what you wear

Jeans originated to be worn with boots. Cowboy boots, working boots. Boot cut is the only cut that does the job that jeans were designed for -- Riding, working, hiking, etc.
The rest of it is just "fashion".

boot cut seems to be the only one that flatters all figures.

The problem with skinny jeans is that if you weigh 5 extra pounds they make your back end look big and if you are 5 pounds underweight, they make you look like a stick incect. You also have to have a perfectly perportioned body. Of the people wearing them, 90% shouldn't be. I can't see them really making a big dent in the jean industry.

where is the lee bulky from the seventies... nicest fitting looking jean out there ever

Because of the massive size of my thighs relative to waist size, I have to find the loosest fit type of jeans available. Otherwise someday I might pull an Incredible Hulk and burst through my jeans at the thights. Which might be cool in a way, but I would prefer to avoid it.

I am into bell bottom jeans from the early 70's.

Actually I meant bootcut. Flared are fine too if they are flared to an exageration.

Anyone who has tried to pull a skinny legged jeans over a cowboy or riding boot know why boot cut are the reason they have stayed on top of the list. Despite what those whom think low rise are flattering just need to look at back side of person leaning over or setting down, I don't know about you, but I sure do not enjoy seeing the crack of someone's hairy arse sticking out for all the world to see. And another thing that is absolutely disgusting is someone's fat belly hanging over the front of a low rise jeans. Every single person I see wearing low rise jeans are forever trying to pull up their pants.
      • A Yahoo! User 7 months ago
If you buy them to fit, they don't fall off and the crack of your butt doesn't hang out. I think maybe people just buy their jeans too tight. Low rise jeans look way better than the high-rise pants on fuller figured women.

some of us have short waists.. high rise jeans are just plain uncomfortable on me because the waist actually digs into my ribs. ( literally, and I have these 2 incredibly tiny extra ribs on each side, that make high waisted pants, jeans etc.. even more unbearably uncomfortable )

boot cuts fit most people's body shapes. that's why.

Did they consider that half of those Jeans were bought by men who have no idea what the other 4 styles of jeans are? And what DO they call the jeans that have the crotch at the knee and the waist below the butt?

Silly, and ugly ? ( PULL 'EM UP !!!!! )
      • CircleofTyrants 7 months ago
it truly is a skate thing.. the baggy waist and crotch, are useful for skating and when doing tricks.. freedom of movement. try doing tricks on a skate board with tight jeans..thats how accidents happen.. hahaha..

I don't buy low rise jeans because i like to show my thong... I buy them because even tho it seems like it would be the opposite they are more flattering on a person with a tummy.. and more comfortable because they don't dig in when I sit. maybe its just my body type but higher rise jeans make me look much bigger.
      • littlelg 7 months ago
I agree....The low rise, boot cut , or slightly flared look best on me too...very flattering...and I'm not telling you my age!
    • Aquarian  •  7 months ago
Flared jeans rock. You don't have to be anorexic to wear them. Love them! I don't like the baggy ones, neither do I like the low cut. Some of us are more shapely. We don't want the whole world to see our imperfections.
    • Ida  •  7 months ago
Or maybe it is because only 2% of the female population actually looks good in skinny jeans, and the rest do have a brain that tells them to wear something they look good in, rather than something that they are told they should wear because it is the trend.

I hope boot cut jeans never go out to style, they are the best looking to me!
