Taste test: Best burgers in Canada

Where should you go when you feel a burger craving coming on? We courageously sampled burgers of all types to compile this list. It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it. Check out this roundup for our picks for Canada's top fast-food-chain hamburgers.

    All prices are approximate.

    If you love: Classic
Try: McDonald's Quarter Pounder with Cheese

    McDonald's quarter pounder burger

This patty is meaty tasting, slightly salty and juicy. It's surrounded by melted cheese slices and topped with the classics: mayo, heavy on the ketchup, tomato and pickle (but you knew that already, right?). The bun is thin but tasty and topped with lots of sesame seeds. Yum!
    Cost: $4.30

    If you love: Beefy
    Try: Harvey's Great Canadian

    Harvey's Great Canadian burger

This thick and moist Angus beef burger looks homemade. It's even topped with real, block-style cheddar rather than the more commonly-used processed cheese slices. We loved that you can select your toppings as the burger is assembled and that it's in a soft bun that looks like a ciabatta.
    Cost: $6.00

    If you love: Meatless
    Try: Harvey's Veggie Burger

    Harvey's Veggie burger

Meat lovers prepare to be fooled! This vegetarian burger looks just like a meaty hamburger and it tastes pretty darn close to one too when it's loaded up with fresh toppings. We were also pleased to find that it comes with the option of a whole wheat bun. But we do recommend that you order it with cheese or it may feel like something's missing.
    Cost: $ 4.50

    If you love: Bacon
    Try: Wendy's Bacon Deluxe Single

    Wendy's Bacon Deluxe burger

This average-sized patty is juicy, but the toppings are really the highlight. Thick, slightly crisp bacon, fresh-tasting tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion and crunchy pickles make this burger special.  It's all sandwiched between a soft, fresh white bun. For something smaller, try Wendy's JBC (JR. BACON CHEESEBURGER), which gives you a mini cheesy bacon taste at less than half the price of the Deluxe.
    Cost: $4.90

    If you love: Simple
    Try: A&W Teen Burger

    A&W Teen burger

This burger has the perfect amount of each ingredient — crispy thick bacon, cheese-topped chargrilled patty, a moderate amount of classic toppings and a soft bun that doesn't overwhelm.
    Cost: $4.80

Best burgers in Toronto are at The Burgers Priest. Five Guys are good too. This article is beyond useless.
      • Bill Chang 3 months ago
Agree useless. Also, Craft Burger at King/Portland and Good Burger at Gerard/Jones.
      • A. Guy 3 months ago
Craft Burger is the best of the three.

how the hell are you considered a professional? mcdonalds, a&w, wendy's? I wouldn't even consider them rateable
    • DUH...YA.... UH OK!  •  3 months ago
      WTF!!!
The food you mention is absolute garbage. Do your homework Victoria. The best burgers are made fresh in household kitchens across the country. In manitoba, there are many little food restaurants in small towns that serve up an incredible and healthy burger as well as the larger established restaurants.
You need to get out more.

Hit up Red Top (on St. Mary's and Niverville), George's (Bishop Grandin and St. Mary's) or Daly Burger (on Corydon). Fat Boys to die for....
      • Pierluca C 3 months ago
problem is most of the places DUH YA, WAYNE, and KYLE mentioned are not located all over Canada, therefore you can't consider them.

Everyone should find a Five Guys Burger and Fries and try it. They are made fresh and to order and the cajun hand cut fries are awesome. Look it up! I am certain you will thank me.
      • Daniel O'Beirn 3 months ago
I thought their fries were good, but didn't think much of their burger.
      • El Kabong 3 months ago
Five Guys is the best around Edmonton . Real handmade patties for the burgers , generous fries and free refills for the pop.

BEST burgers in Canada? From fast-food chains?? Seriously????? You've got to be kidding me... Pa-the-tic!

Seriously, Victoria... there are more options from REAL hamburger joints all over Canada (Burger's Priest, Craft, Apache and Woody's in Toronto; Rocky's in Calgary; Heck, even Fatburger (as a semi-fast food chain) in Vancouver, for crying out loud! Every one runs rings around ANY of the global chains you mention. Although I'll concede one thing: You really have to be courageous to recommend fast food chains over a mile-long list of tastier, overall better, made-with-at-least-a-little-bit-of-love-and-pride, Canadian hamburger choices.

Call me a snob, but I love a honest hamburger. And the list above just does not cut it. Not even close.

Having never seen either mayo or tomato on a McDonalds quarter-pounder, I wonder whether anything in the article is to be believed.
    • Direct  •  3 months ago
This article is a joke. No way is fast food going to be even rated "good" in the hunt for the best burger. If I could I would offer my choices. Bear in mind I picked from chains that I hope most of you have heard of, it makes no sence to name a single location restarant. Five Guys burgers and Fries, Fuddruckers, and a distant third Fatburger.

I work at a place called Sunset Grill. We may not have the best burgers in all of Canada but I can sure as hell assure you the burgers we serve are 10,000 times better than any fast food burger you can ever find. Ours being hand made means that every batch is not quite the same as the last what with the seasoning / spices we use... heck when I have one of our burgers I don't even put any condiments on the damn burger. Just the meat itself with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle slices. I highly suggest if you want a burger you to to a real restaurant. Anywhere the hamburgers are hand made from fresh hamburger should be good.

She should have said best fast food joint burgers, and they still would have been at the bottom of any list.

This is what I call lazy journalism. Make an effort FFS get out to the restaurants spend some time doing a story, it's not like you are on a deadline with this story. And since when has what McDonald's serves been called a 'hamburger"

Couldn't agree more with your comments.

Has anyone tried a Weber burger? Take a drive up highway 11 this summer and stop in at Webers, just south of Gravenhurst. The line-ups look long but move quickly. Great place to stretch and let the kids run around before heading north for the rest of the trip to the cottage or campground. Anonymous, Caledon, Ontario
      • Linda 3 months ago
Yep, our cottage is just north of there....only problem is the lineups on the weekend.
    • Richard  •  Kitchener, Ontario  •  3 months ago
Victoria, how much did the restaurants pay to get a mention in your waste of time article? Beyond useless is being kind. This is total trash.
