Wealthier women claim to have better sex, study shows

Who's getting the best nooky in the bedroom?

A new Spanish study suggests that wealthier women are more satisfied with their sex lives, have safer sex and are more likely to use contraception than women of lower socioeconomic status.

"People of a lower socioeconomic status claim to be less satisfied sexually, which especially applies to women, who seem to be more influenced by these factors," says lead author Dolores Ruiz from the Barcelona Public Health Agency.

The study, which looked at 9,850 Spaniards in 2009, found that overall, the population seemed pretty pleased with their sex lives. A whopping 90 per cent of men and women said they were either quite or very satisfied with their sex lives. (Maybe it has something to do with their healthy Mediterranean diet?)

But interestingly, the researchers made another acute observation -- they claim that there is a direct correlation between the socioeconomic status of people and their overall satisfaction in the bedroom.

While it's not surprising that wealthier (and presumably more educated) women would report safer sex and greater use of contraception, the fact that they are more sexually satisfied is intriguing.

The authors attribute this finding to “a better awareness of their own needs and a greater capacity for developing their sexuality in a way which is satisfying for them.”

It's a vague statement that seems to run counter to the implications of countless articles in North American women's magazines that suggest women are in dire need of a libido boost. Not to mention the drugs available to women who want to increase their sex drive.

Admittedly, it's possible that the sex lives of Spaniards are not reflective of the sex lives of North Americans, explaining why our well-to-do women gobble up those libido-boosting articles.

This Spanish study falls on the heels of another recent Greek study suggesting that wealthier people have more sex. Researchers discovered that people who have sex four or more times a week make more money than those with less active sex lives.
