Shine OnWakeboarding marriage proposal goes viral
Twenty-one-year-old Brynn Hathaway of Idaho could not have asked for a more fitting marriage proposal.
The lucky girl's fiancé proposed while the couple were wakeboarding — a sport the childhood sweethearts have been doing together since they were 12-years-old.
"I had no idea that I would be getting proposed to on a surfboard, I just thought it as a normal day on the lake," Brynn tells the Daily Mail.
Matt Gencarella, 21, also from Idaho, managed to kneel on one knee while the two were wakeboarding to pop the question.
"I wasn't worried about falling off," he says. "All I could think of was how I was going to ask Brynn to spend the rest of her life with me. That was all that mattered in the moment."
A YouTube video capturing the beautiful moment has gone viral with over one million views and 800 comments since it was posted on Sept. 19.
The pair, who grew up together near the lake in Coer d'Alene, Idaho, met at a gymnastics class when they were 11-years-old.
"I have known that I wanted to marry Matthew since I was 17, so I am thrilled that we are getting married next year," says Brynn. "He is really so wonderful and thoughtful, I feel like a very lucky girl."
To pull off the surprise stunt, Matt told Brynn that his best friend's watersports company wanted to shoot a promotional video of the two of them wakeboarding. He then practiced getting down on one knee while on a moving wakeboard for an hour leading up to the big day.
"We went through every scenario of how she might react and what I would do in each situation," explains Matt.
"I could not have been happier with how it all went. The joy we shared in that moment with each other, and our family and friends, was priceless."
Brynn and Matt plan to get married in Coer d'Alene at the end of August.
While their wakeboarding antics are surely impressive, they are not the only couple to celebrate their love with watersports.
Last month, a couple of Vancouver swimmers who met at the University of British Columbia pool got married while water-skiing.
