Toddler hears mother’s voice for the first time

Little Reyn Schadt's tears made her mother smile.

The 16-month-old toddler from Louisville, Ky., was born with the congenital virus cytomegalovirus, or CMV. It left her deaf.

The little girl was recently fitted with a cochlear implant — and heard her mother's voice for the first time.

She burst into tears — a normal response to the implant being turned on — when she heard her first sound.

"It's a very exciting day for me because I've met children who have cochlear implants who are older than her and that has been the most inspiring thing for me," Reyn's mother, Courtney, told WDRB. "The kids run around the playground and you never notice the implant and those kids are amazing!"

Two months after starting to hear, Reyn is now singing along to "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" with her mother and big brother, Charlie.

"We've really seen her personality blossom during the past two months," Courtney says. "It's been amazing. I feel like we've just made this huge journey where at the beginning I felt hopeless about it. It was a big mourning period for us as a family because we really didn't know what her future held. Now her whole life is ahead of her without any limitation."

In September 2011, two-year-old Cooper heard his mom's voice for the first time, thanks to a cochlear implant. The video went viral.

And last month, a cutting-edge auditory brain stem implant helped three-year-old Grayson hear his dad's voice for the first time, too.

It's not just kids getting the gift of hearing.

Amy, a 26-year-old deaf woman, heard her son's voice for the first time last fall. Watch her hear six-year-old Blake say "Hi, Mom" here.
