TIFF 2012 fashion and jewelry trends

The stars have descended upon Toronto and the red carpets are rolled out across the city to welcome Hollywood's heavyweights to the annual Toronto International Film Festival.

And a red carpet premiere at one of the world's biggest film festivals wouldn't be complete without a little (or a lot) of sparkle and dazzle.

Here are some of the fashion and jewelry trends you can expect to see celebrities working during TIFF and how to score the look for yourself — at a fraction of the cost.

TIFF is unique in that its timing is not quite summer, not quite winter, says Francois Ortarix, Swarovski red carpet style expert. This lets celebs sport any style of outfit from a full coverage frock to cocktail dresses and even jackets and pants.

"People are also more daring," notes Ortarix, adding that while pastel colours and nudes are always top picks, the special laid-back atmosphere of TIFF usually sees celebs sporting more daring colours such as emerald green and red.

Ortarix says that while there was a period a few years ago that jewelry was all about minimalism, this year it's making a comeback with chunky statement pieces among the more popular picks. Bold earrings, bib necklaces and large rings are all on trend.

"Most people are not keen on big pieces," he says, but it's all about how you style them with your overall look that can really make an outfit stand out.

"When you pick any piece of jewelry," says Ortarix, "see if it goes with a pair of jeans and a white shirt." He says this will show you the piece can go with anything, maximizing your investment. You can then dress up or down, depending on your personal style and budget.

Also think beyond diamonds and other pricey jewels. Pieces in crystal, glass or other coloured synthetics look just as stunning for a fraction of the cost, and you won't worry as much about losing them while dancing the night away, nor will you have a guard standing by like many celebs at fancy events.
