‘Tap’ app splits restaurant bill for you

Tap is a new app that lets you split a restaurant bill between two or more people. That's right, no more phone calculators, counting on fingers, or glares at the friend who bought prime rib and wants to split the bill equally.

All that is required is for someone to take a picture of the bill with their iOS or Android smartphone and input each diner's name. The phone is then sent around the table for each person to claim what they ordered. If two people shared a dish, both can claim it and the app automatically divides the dish total. The app then splits the full bill, including tax and tip, among all the diners -- providing a sum that each person owes.

You can even add the last four digits of each person's credit card to show your server what amount to put on each card. And if it's someones birthday, the app is particularly handy as multiple friends can claim the birthday guy or gal's dish.

“No more back-of-the-napkin algebra or typing in prices by hand!” touts the app's website.

Brilliant? We think so.

Another restaurant app currently taking Canada by storm is Just Eat, which allows iOS smartphone users to place a takeout delivery order from their phone. It hosts Canada's largest database of delivery and takeout restaurants (over 3,500) while catering to diverse tastes including Thai, Indian, Italian, American and Japanese.

As an added bonus the restaurants regularly offer 10-20 per cent discounts. An Android version of the app is supposed to be release this month.
