‘How to Succeed with Brunettes’: retro U.S. Navy training film helps men woo brown-haired ladies

Not sure how to win over that cute brunette? The U.S. Navy can help you with that, gentlemen — or at least they tried to in 1967.

In a 16-minute video recently released by the National Archives, the U.S. Navy offers its officers serving in the Vietnam War some Mad Men-esque etiquette pointers and dating advice to ensure they pursue their brown-haired objects of affection the "right" way.

Watch what to do — and what not to do — in"How to Succeed with Brunettes" above.

Before the video is totally dismissed for being hilariously outdated — ordering for your date at a restaurant today might not go over very well — certain nuggets of dating wisdom still hold up, like the importance of punctuality:

"Let's face it, a good-looking girl isn't going to wait around for anybody," warns the narrator.

"Better than I thought it would be," one viewer comments.

"Actually it mostly takes you through how to go on a date showing good manners, a reminder I think lots of people could use. The only thing I'd really say as an update is that most of these that the woman can follow the suggestions too. I like a door held for me, but if I'm first I have no trouble holding the door for the man."

The video concludes with great (and hopefully obvious) advice:

"Success with brunettes and blondes or anybody is built upon respect. And being a gentleman is about commanding respect. How to succeed with brunettes? Be a gentleman!"

One 10-year-old "gentleman in the making" already knows that. Watch his advice for today's daters here.
