Saudi Arabia’s first ever anti-abuse ad?

It's a step in the right direction some might say. The foundation responsible for creating Saudi Arabia's first ever anti-abuse ad claims they want to "achieve justice for all women and children exposed to abuse."

The ad, created by the King Khalid Foundation for their No More Abuse campaign, shows a woman dressed in full hijab with a bruised left eye.

The tagline: "Some things can't be covered: Fighting women's abuse together." There is also an Arabic version of the ad.

"The phenomenon of battered women in Saudi Arabia is much greater than is apparent on the surface," the No More Abuse section reads.

The image is making the rounds on the popular social networking site, Reddit, where it has received 337 comments within the first 21 hours of being posted.

Some of the comments about the image engage thought-provoking discussion.

"Wow I never thought that I would see this coming out of Saudi Arabia. I suppose there are actually real changes taking place," writes TROPtastic.

"People are more open minded in SA than you probably think. For example, a majority of the population want to repeal the driving ban (just google some polls) but the problem is it would cause mass unemployment because every family in SA has at least one personal driver for the women of the house," writes kelsorangesoda.

Yet predictably, a posting like this can't go without enraging some and ruffling feathers.

"Exactly why I generally refuse to delve into posts regarding Islam or the Middle East. It leaves me fuming. As worldly as some redditors seem, they can be just as ignorant and prejudiced," writes areyoumycushion.

Currently, all Saudi women are under the guardianship of a man, usually their father, husband or brother. The means they cannot travel freely without the consent of their guardian and are also banned from driving.

Stories about women's rights in Saudi Arabia have been regularly making the news over the past several months.

Two female athletes in August became the first Saudi women to compete at the Olympic Games.

And just this month, it was reported that Saudi women are being encouraged by the government to use a bicycle, something they were never allowed to do.
