Man fakes his own gruesome death in twisted wedding proposal

For most, a wedding proposal is a romantic affair — think roses and champagne. And even if the hopeful fella just gets down on one knee on the jumbotron, it's usually still a happy moment for the bride-to-be. But recently, one Russian man decided to go another way, faking his own gruesome death only to come back to life to propose to his terrified girlfriend.

Alexey Bykov hired a a filmmaker, makeup artists and stuntmen to create an elaborate car crash scene. When his girlfriend Irena Kolokov arrived, he was laying on the ground covered in blood, and paramedics rushed up to informed her that he was dead. Predictably, she burst into tears, but then moments later Bykov sprang back to life and got down on one knee to propose. At first Kolokov was angry, but ultimately she said yes.

Bykov's reason for the perverse proposal?

"I wanted her to realise how empty her life would be without me and how life would have no meaning without me," says the upbeat 30-year-old. How romantic.

This isn't the first time a man has gone to horrific lengths to terrify his girlfriend into marrying him.

In 2009, a Baltimore man staged a raid using actual cops while he and his girlfriend slept in their private boat. The fake drug bust raid included circling helicopters and armed officers bursting in on the couple. The uniformed cops told the poor woman she was under arrest, but as they turned her to put on the cuffs, there was Mr. Right, holding out the ring. And wouldn't you know it, she said yes.

It would seem romance means different things to different people. For some it's kisses and chocolate, for others it's a swat team and the threat of five to ten in the slammer.
