Groom Brandon Cassata shocks fiancée with surprise wedding

For some women, Brandon Cassata's romantic gesture would not go over well. But for the bride-to-be overwhelmed with the details of planning her big day, it might just be the sweetest thing ever.

Fortunately for Cassata, his wife, Mary-Cathrin McCarthy, says her wedding day was "perfect," even though it came as a complete surprise.

The couple from Fort Worth, Texas, were planning a November wedding.

But with the help of his in-laws, Cassata instead threw McCarthy her dream wedding last Saturday -- seven months early.

After a series of stressful wedding-planning events, Cassata wanted to relieve his bride of any further stress.

"I watched the show Bridezillas, and I was like, 'Uh, no, not for me,'" he tells TODAY. "We wanted to take the stress off of her and actually help her out with that, so in that we did."

Cassata knew he was making a risky move, but was confident his fiancée would be up the sudden change of plans.

"I had reassurance from her mother as well. She had a big hand in that. She was kind of my coach in all this," he tells TODAY. "Her brother was definitely a big part of it, too."

On the day of the surprise wedding, Cassata arranged to have McCarthy get her bridal hair and makeup done for what she believed were early bridal portraits at their planned venue, the Hilton in Southlake, Texas.

As she was driven to the hotel, she watched a video message from her fiancé on her iPad.

"There's going to be a lot of surprises today for you. And I just want you to know that I'm right there by your side," he says in the video.

"So I've decided, let's get married today!"

When McCarthy arrived at the destination, she was greeted by the wedding party, all dressed for the occasion.

"Guys, what are you doing here?" she exclaims in a moment captured on camera.

At that point, McCarthy's brother gave Cassata, who was waiting for his bride at the ceremony, a thumbs up: the surprise was a successful, joyful one.

Both families were there, too, along with dozens of guests, all waiting at the ceremony where they watched McCarthy's entire surprise on a live feed.

"I don’t think I could process what was going on. I was so overwhelmed with love," McCarthy says.

When asked by her wedding planner if she'd like to go through with the wedding, McCarthy didn't hesitate to say yes.

"I am very, very relieved that she said yes. I'm very excited," Cassata tells CBS Dallas. "This is a great moment in our lives."

And while many of us wouldn't jump for joy at the thought of a wedding sprung upon us, McCarthy insists she wouldn't have it any other way.

"It's OK. If it happens, it’s OK," she tells TODAY. "It was beautiful. I'm so happy. It was perfect."

"It was well worth it," Cassata adds.
