Cat café coming to Montreal

Cat lovers, rejoice. Montreal is opening North America's first-ever cat café.

Set to open its doors this summer, Café Chat l'Heureux — translation: "happy cat café"— will serve coffee, tea and pastries while friendly felines hang out with customers.

The cat-centric joint hopes to raise awareness about the treatment of animals in Quebec, boost customers' spirits with a cuddly dose of "cat therapy" and facilitate the adoption of cats, mtlblog.com reports.

Owner Clément Marty is currently raising funds on Indiegogo to help ensure the café will open this summer. The café's Facebook page already has over 10,000 likes.

Marty was inspired by the cat cafes already popular in Japan and South Korea. (Vienna and Paris now have them, too.)

Café Chat l'Heureux will be North America's first.

It certainly won't be the last.

Courtney Hatt and David Braginsky are hoping to introduce the concept to San Francisco with KitTea, where customers can sip on cat-nip infused tea while shelter kittens, who are all up for adoption, mingle with humans.

For the San Francisco cat-lovers, their biggest hurdle to opening a cat café are the health regulations that prohibit animals in food facilities.

Their solution: two walls and a hallway that will divide the food service area and the "cat oasis." Customers can then voluntarily bring their tea to the cat room.

Another cat café, Cat Town Café, is promising to open in Oakland this summer. Its founders are also hoping to find financial support on Indiegogo.
