The most surprising thing about Pam Hopkins' 54-year relationship with her cardigan is that, somehow, it's never lost a button.

"[It] is still intact since it was given to me," the 75-year-old charming British grandmother tells the South Wales Evening Post about her yellow, green and brown knit sweater.

"I think it has worn quite well over the years."

It comes as no surprise, though, that Hopkins' family likes to tease her about the well-worn cozy cardigan, which she received as a Christmas gift from her mother-in-law in 1960.

“They laugh at it,” she says. “They just think it is old fashioned.”

The mother of four and grandmother of eight even offered proof to the South Wales Evening Post that she still wears her prized sweater, pulling out photos of herself sporting the vintage button-up just a few years ago.

Hopkins' story inspired a 70-year-old British man to go public with the tale of his 55-year-old knit sweater.

Mike Davies tells the South Wales Evening Post about his zip-up wool sweater, which was made by his mother when he was a boy.

"I, along with my twin brother, had these jumpers knitted in Canadian wool by our mum in 1959," he says. "We were 15 years old, and can both fit into these jumpers now at nearly 70 years of age."

While Davies admits it's truly amazing that he can still fit into the sweater after 55 years, he credits his wife's excellent care for its pristine condition.
