Boyfriend proposes in underwater scuba diving treasure hunt

Here at Shine, we've covered some pretty unique marriage proposals. Some have been smashing success stories -- some others, not so much.

But rarely do we hear about wordless proposals conducted underwater.

Recently, Virgina man Joseph House, 23, was vacationing with his girlfriend Jessica Forbes, 21, near the Grand Cayman in the Caribbean.

"I booked a cruise for Christmas. It was a Christmas gift for her," House tells ABC. "I wanted a proposal that was going to be something creative that I had never heard of or seen before."

He pretended they were going on a treasure hunt under the sea, and after finding a treasure chest and stylishly tripping over his flipper, he pulled out a map that says, "So, are you going to marry me or not?" and gets down on one knee.

A video of the experience is posted on YouTube.

Forbes, so taken back and unable to say anything breathing out of her scuba diving gear, simply squeals, tears steaming down her mask, and puts the ring on her finger. She then rushes back up to the surface where she pulls off her mask and exclaims, "Oh my God, baby" before embracing House in a kiss.

The best part is that the camera man, confused by her reaction and asking for clarification, says, "Ahhhh, so that's a yes?"

Indeed it was. Later, Forbes explains the proposal was a complete surprise because she expected he would do it on the first day of their vacation, if it were to happen at all.

"When we were under water they showed us lots of other figurines in the ocean, and so when they showed us the treasure chest I was like, 'Oh, that's cool, a treasure chest,' and kept on swimming," Forbes tells ABC.

"And then Joey went down to it, and I saw him trip over his flipper as he was getting on his knee, and I saw the ring on the map, and I saw ‘Marry’ and then I just knew.”

Neither of them, who have been dating for just over a year, had been scuba diving before.

As it turns out, YouTube is filled with videos of underwater marriage proposals, some of them not quite as slick as House's. It also appears the universal signal for saying "yes" to an underwater marriage proposal is an A-okay hand sign.
