Look, I don't always like to group things into categories of "for men" and "for women" but it can't be denied that common belief is that guys like action movies and women like romances. And frankly, most men I know would confirm that (women's opinions seem to be more split). But deep down, I think a lot of guys have a soft spot for at least one stereotypically "girlie" movie, and sometimes, they aren't even ashamed of it. And rightfully so, some of these movies are undeniably awesome.

An informal poll of some friends, and some of my own experiences, contributed to this non-comprehensive list:

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days: This entire post was inspired by my roommate Ryan, who can't see this magazine-inspired rom-com while channel surfing and NOT turn it on for a few minutes and/or bust out the Matthew McConaughey quote, ""Yeah you, you named my penis after a dame!" while cracking up to himself. Hilarious.

The Devil Wears Prada: OK, maybe this is more of a romance about those thigh-high Chanel boots, but my friend M. claims it's a girlie movie her husband can get behind. She says she has no specific evidence that he likes this movie, other than that "he doesn't bitch when it's on" and he occasionally deigns to look up from his laptop and watch. For him, that's basically as good as squee-ing when he sees it on the channel guide.

The Notebook: Of course it was under my influence that my ex saw this movie, but I didn't force him to act out a scene from it in public, or to constantly ask me to "Say I'm a bird." He was way into it.

Knocked Up:
Why wouldn't men like the fantasy that they could end up scoring with a really hot girl at a bar, then convince her to have a real relationship with him all while hanging out with their friends, drinking and watching porn?

The Princess Bride: Gal pal C. offers that her ex was pretty into this movie. I almost didn't put this one on the list though, since although it is technically romantic, it's just too widely beloved by dudes to be remotely considered a chick flick. No one can deny the awesomeness of this movie. (Can you believe it's 25 years old?)

Love Actually: One married guy I know who's a sucker for all things romance, unabashedly (really, check out his tip to woo your guy), is of course into the motherlode of feel-good holiday loving in cinematic form.

The Last Song: My BFF says "Um, my boyfriend saw this. In theaters. By himself." Now there's a man who's not embarrassed to embrace romance. Or Miley Cyrus.

Moulin Rouge: My friend's boyfriend L. says "Does Moulin Rouge count as a romance?" I say: Um, yes buddy. A romance with singing and dancing, which is extra super duper romantic, right girls?

500 Days of Summer: J. says he likes this movie because it explores the topic of a guy dealing with romantic troubles, as opposed to the countless Bridget Jones type movies that deal with a woman's pain.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall: See reasoning above, add in guy-favorite hottie Mila Kunis and Jason Segel's insanely funny naked crying scene, and men are in.

What romantic movies does your guy secretly love? Why is it his fave?
