    Baobab: The newest superfruit

iStockphotoMove over, goji berries, there’s a new superfruit moving in! It contains more antioxidants than acai or blueberries, more calcium than milk, more fibre than apples, more vitamin C than oranges and more iron than spinach. And you probably haven’t heard of it.

The tangy exotic baobab fruit, often described as “a cross between grapefruit, pear and vanilla,” is coming to the United States and Canada.

An ingredient previously only enjoyed in Africa, locals would eat the so-called “Vitamin Tree” fruit fresh or crush and stir the crumbly pulp into drinks or porridge. Here, we’ll get it as a naturally dehydrated powder.
“The powdery white interior of the baobab fruit can be used as an ingredient in many foods — as a thickener in jams and gravies, a sweetener for fruit drinks, or a tangy flavour addition to hot sauces,” reports National Geographic.

Will it catch on as the next acai? Experts seem to think so, estimating the international market could rake in $1 billion a year.

“Baobab is moving from cottage industry into the mainstream,” says Malcolm Riley, of the Yozuna jam company in England. He now counts a large chain of British food stores among his customers. “It’s got mass potential.”

If you’re looking to be among the first to embrace this superfruit, you can buy the powder online at retailers like Baobab Foods – 170g will cost you $20 US.

The American and Canadian governments know there are diseases that have been cured in third world counties that can be cured here however, if diseases began to get cured then they would not make any money right? They will not let the mass population know there are cures for certain diseases.

        tht is very true

Unfortunately that's true. A healthy population is not a money maker, yet on the other hand, healthier people are able to work. Govt will never step in to fight for us - we line their pockets to a certain extent and they can get more $$ with illnesses.

What a shame!!! This fruit making a billion dollar industry while the starving people in the continent of origin cannot get even close it. Who has been mass producing this while watching these people suffer. Hope whom ever is involve gives back to the people of the continent.

At that price, I would stick to eating blueberries. I'm not a nutritionist, but I assume that eating a serving of blueberries daily would still be enough antioxidants, and the benefits eventually plateau at some point, kind of like an average person drinking 30 cups of water a day vs 10 cups. Also, consider the longest living people on earth probably never touched baobab. Meanwhile, places where it's cultivated like Zimbabwe have a life expectancy of 42 years. And lastly, baobab may lose most of its punch by the time it reaches North America . . I read somewhere that by the time acai reaches us from Brazil, it's about the same as local blueberries that don't travel as far. Long story short, don't expect one miracle fruit to drastically improve your health, no matter what those upcoming baobab e-mail spams will tell you. (Of course, if they ever figure out how to grow these locally at the same price as blueberries then hey go for it. Ok, I'm done. :) )

?how long does the baobab tree take to produce fruit? There are good nuritious food from hemp plant - make bread from hemp seeds, feed hemp seeds to chickens - eat chickens, eat eggs, feed leaves and branches of hemp to goats - eat goat, goat milk, make clothes and building materials from hemp (shelter), hemp grows well in desert and heat, etc etc.
It is stupid laws that create famine conditions.
There are more plants than just hemp.

Wow, the writer did a good job of marketing this stuff. Please provide medical papers to prove your point. For the meantime I'll go with apple , oranges and local fruits.

I want the real fruit not just the powder form.

      So expensive, like Dragon Fruit.......

Grow it locally. I want to support sustainable business and local economies. :-)
