An Excuse To Drink More Coffee

Researchers have confirmed what you probably already know: Coffee has the ability to make you happier.

A study out of the Harvard School of Public Health, which looked at 50,739 women over the course of three decades, found that a female's risk of depression goes down as her caffeine consumption goes up. Those who regularly drank coffee were 20 percent less likely to be depressed than those who didn't drink it regularly or opted for decaf instead.

And the chances a woman would suffer from depression went down with every additional cup of java consumed, up to six cups a day. Any more than that may not be a good idea, though. And not just because you'll be shaking so badly, you may not be able to function. As the New York Times noted, a previous study found that the risk of suicide decreased with every coffee consumed, up to six or seven mugs, but then began to increase with the eighth one. (If you're already throwing back six mugs a day and your doctor says it's fine, keep on sucking down the good stuff. But we—and health experts—don't recommend making that your goal since it can mess with your sleep schedule and affect the quality of your sleep.)

This is the just one of many studies that claim downing coffee is beneficial to your well-being—though it's one of the largest to date. Earlier this year, we reported on research that discovered drinking joe reduces your risk of a stroke by 25 percent. And another study concluded that the drink was linked to a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
