7 Signs He’s about to Propose

According to a 2004 Conde Nast Bridal Group study, December is  the most popular month of the year to get engaged. Maybe it’s the merry mood, focus on family, and flowing eggnog that spurs around 19 percent of couples to announce upcoming nuptials. What do you think? Could an engagement ring be under your tree this season? Take a look at these subtle hints to see if visions of proposals are dancing in your guy’s head this season.

1.    You’ve talked about your future a lot lately.

Contrary to what romantic comedies usually portray, engagements don’t typically come out of nowhere. He might pop the question in a surprising way, but chances are you both have known that a wedding is in your future for some time. In addition, he probably won’t get down on bended knee without knowing for sure that you’ll say yes.  Everyone is scared of rejection, after all.  If you’ve discussed long term goals, your future together, and you know your feelings about marriage align, perhaps you’ll be toasting an engagement as well the New Year this season.

2.    You’ve noticed changes in his spending habits.

If saving up for the engagement ring of your dreams is on his mind, chances are he’s been a bit more frugal lately.

3.    He’s inquired about your jewelry taste.

Has your guy showed an increased interest in your favorite jewelry lately? When you pass jewelry storefronts together, do you ever pause to window shop? These casual discussions about taste might indicate that he plans to do some shopping soon and wants to know what to look for.

4.    He’s asked for contact information of your friends or family members.

Your guy wants to make the right ring choice for you, which probably means enlisting the help of people who know you best. You might miss this sign as he’ll try to be sly, but if you happen to find out that he met with your best friend, sister, or mom recently, perhaps he was getting advice. In addition, if your soon-to-be-fiancé is the traditional type, he may try to arrange discussions with your parents to voice his intentions.  Perhaps he pulled your dad aside subtly after Thanksgiving dinner, or stole a few private moments with your mom, for instance.

5.    His pals or your mutual friends seem to know something is up.

Even the most secretive and independent of guys talk about major decisions like marriage. He’s no doubt discussed his plans with his close friends. Paying attention to any differences in behavior from those nearest and dearest to him might give you special insight that something is in the works.

6.    You have a special date or trip planned.

While it’s probably not a good idea to assume that every time your guy schedules a date night he has plans to propose, a particularly romantic evening that he’s had in the works for a while or getaway might tip you off that he’s preparing to pop the question.

7.    He loves the holidays and is especially family-oriented around this time.

The festive, cozy mood around the holidays is perhaps what makes it the most popular time to get engaged. You’re surrounded by friends and family with plenty of toasting opportunities to announce big plans. And hopefully the holidays serve as a reminder of what’s really important. But it can also be a stressful time and not everyone responds to the festive season with merriment. Only you know where your guy lands on the Santa Claus-to-Scrooge spectrum. If the parties, family gatherings, and mistletoe typically bring out the romantic in him, he might be the type to propose around this time. In addition, if including his family on big changes and plans is important to him year round, he might take this opportunity when everyone is together to add to the celebrations with an engagement. On the other hand, if he tends to get overwhelmed or likes to do things in unconventional ways, he might feel that a Christmastime proposal is too cliché.

If you have been been married before, what led up to your proposal? Any subtle hints you can recall in hindsight?
